How to Carve Wood for Beginners

By Joseph Tranturder

Perhaps you are a Boy Scout, or have always had an interest in how to carve objects out of wood. Maybe you want to make a gift for a loved one, or you simply want to carve your favorite animal to set atop your mantle.

Many who hike do so on short day hikes for the purpose of seeing some new attraction or to visit a remote place while others use hiking to get them farther into the mountains, forests or other areas so that they can enjoy a respite of camping and outdoor living. By learning how to plan effectively and fully for a hiking trip, a person and company will be able to better enjoy their hiking trip.

The first thing that person or company must decide on while planning for a hiking trip is somewhat of an obvious initial step in planning but is something that must be accounted for before the details of the trip can be determined. This first decision is simply where a group wants to go hiking.

Wood burning and pyrography supplies have been in use since the days of the ancients to craft, color and depict works of art. Pyrography, or in its direct Greek translation, fire writing, is the use of heated tools or the controlled application of fire and heat to decorate or ordinate such materials as wood, leather, or metal; even hardened vegetables such as gourds have been transformed into works of art by the use of pyrography.

The more basic and common woods can be found at a hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot, but if you're looking for more rare and exotic woods, you'll probably need to go to a hobby or craft shop. There are even specialty wood stores in existence that you could go to and look around.

Most hikes are done in the summer when walking is easier and danger from weather is mitigated but someone planning a hiking trip should do extensive research into the weather patterns of the area they will be hiking in before deciding on a specific day or week to venture there. For example, it would not be smart to hike in the spring mounts in an area that has regular flash floods as these months are more likely to receive rain and thunderstorms than latter months.

Try to keep the paper in the same place the whole time you're tracing so the outline is not disjointed on the piece of wood. Next, take a utility knife from your set of wood carving tools and carve around the outline of your pattern. To continue with your carving, carve out the background of your pattern.

Gear is another key component to plan for while planning a hike. Whether on a day hike or a week long hiking trip, bringing the right gear is of paramount importance as one's very survival may depend on the gear they have available.

Other niceties such as bringing a walking stick may also wish to be planned for. Walking stick and cane supplies can be secured and planned for which will help to aid the hiker along the trail.

Many magnificent creations of art have been crafted from the steady hands of those who practice pyrography. And with their close connection with wood working in general their discipline of etching beauty with fire will continue for as long as people admire quality art and craftsmanship.
