Caring For Your Bike: Using Nuts And Bolts Properly

By Galen Ochua

You were on your bike, cruising outdoors and enjoying the warm breeze then suddenly your brakes and pedals break down and your bicycle comes to a stop. If you use your bike a lot as a means of transportation then this may have happened to you every every so often. Your bicycle's nuts and bolts are to blame for this, which is the reason you should give these minute components a lot of attention.

While it's true that how often you replace your nuts and bolts will depend on the design quality of the bicycle, bicycle owners should still do their best on maintaining their bikes and utilizing it properly. Bolts are inclined to become loose due to constant tremors when you go biking. The more the parts vibrate, the faster the bolts will become loose. This could be prevented though.

Yes, you can always resort to steel fabrication for creating yourself the best customized parts for your bike but metal fabrication isn't the only way to go. Remember that by utilizing nuts and bolts on your bike for their intended use, you no longer have to replace them frequently even if you've traveled over a million miles .

A primary rule is to stop utilizing the bolt for attaching several parts. The more layers of things will only add more weight on it. This is what often occurs in the case of front racks installed to centerpull brakes. However, bolts with a forward extension are inclined to last longer than regular bolts. Washers also tend to loosen the bolts faster. Washers should then be used when required like when a smooth surface is needed between a painted or aluminum component and a bolt.

Bolts with a forked platform are also recommended to be applied on racks. This is because the mount would allow the nuts and bolts to shift independently without moving against each other. In a nutshell, bolts could last longer as you don't overuse them or attach them to more than one layer of the bike's components.
