Being a Fan of Obstacle Course Racing As a Child

By Rob Sutter

If you grew up during the 90's and watched a lot of Nickelodeon, I think it's safe to say that you had come across several game shows. While you had "Double Dare," which was unquestionably one of the most popular shows in the network's history, there were those which actually rewarded physical prowess. I can name off quite a couple of them and even after all of this time, they stick with me since they are fond memories. Obstacle course racing shows certainly took much of my time.

When it comes to 90's Nickelodeon, I don't think there's a single show that gets it more right than "Guts." It definitely has a place as the cream of the crop when it comes to game shows on that network. It did not waste time with silly graphics, as it was simply a matter of kids facing off in one competition after another in order to take home the prize. "Guts" stands firm in terms of popularity but I don't think I can consider it my absolute favorite.

If you want to know my favorite, I think many others will agree that "Legends of the Hidden Temple" was one of the best. There was a good deal of mental comprehension that the competitors had to do but when they got into the athletics, the show certainly picked up in the way of enjoyment. In addition, maneuvering through the actual temple proved to be challenging for those who stepped inside. The iconic shirts they wore are so popular today that people can actually buy them.

"Legends of the Hidden Temple" may be fun but I'll have an argument in mind for those which deem it a copycat of "American Gladiators." Firstly, you have to consider that channels with children shows do not use obstacle course racing programs that often, if at all, so it was important to give a younger audience that type of show. In addition, it possesses a Mesoamerican theme that wasn't exactly seen before. Regardless, I think these shows have had a lasting impression, especially when considering such events as Spartan Race.

I've been accused of being nostalgic a time or two before but sometimes you can't help it. You look at the shows you watched in the past and it's almost like a sea of good memories washes over you and you can't help but to take it all in. Obstacle course racing is one of those subjects that I loved so much as a child and desired so much to participate in those games myself. As an adult, it's somewhat difficult to brush that desire away.
