Restaurants take away the Blues

By Paul Burns

Take it away! Restaurants just keep on opening up.

Perhaps you have like me had a moment with your cat where you have threatened him with being sold to the local Chinese after you found him with his claws sunk into the sofa.

We do make our jokes about Chinese restaurants due to the stories we have heard but the reality is that Chinese food across our nation is of a very high standard. Those stories come from the odd sensational newspaper article and from restaurants with employees fresh off the boat from China and with habits from back home.

I have often had visitors over on our island from the continent and they invariably love our Chinese and Indian food. It has a real reputation over there and they are not people who tolerate low standard food - on the contrary.

It has so much become part of British culture to have a good Indian or Chinese - as much as eating the traditional fish and chips. Most towns of any size and even some villages have Chinese or Indian restaurants and there is always a take away option available.

Take away is part of the British culture too. To sit down in front of a good movie with a take away from one of the local restaurants is a feature of many a Saturday night for our population throughout the land. For this reason and because of the basic love of the British to enjoy a meal out, the restaurant culture keeps on thriving.

While some shops may have closed due to the recession, most towns have experienced an expansion in their selection of places to eat and have a coffee. Some towns have turned into destinations for eating and drinking more than shopping and so the restaurants continue to do business.

So take it away, restaurants - the way to our hearts obviously continues to be through our stomachs.
