Necklace - A Most-Loved Stylish Piece Of Jewelry Of All Times

Different kinds of necklaces including silver necklace have been part of different civilizations across different parts of the globe. Defined as ornaments worn around the neck, these pieces of jewelry are popular not only to women but also among men, no matter the age. They are also being considered as one of the most common gift ideas in different celebrations such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

A necklace made of 41 strings of mollusks and is said to have been used 75,000 years ago have been excavated and found in South Africa by a group of archeologist in April of 2004. Before this, one that was strung on a thread and mostly made of shells, bones, stones, and animal teeth and was used 30,000 years ago was the oldest known necklace. These two were found by historians solidify the belief that such items truly are jewelry pieces that have been around since the olden and till today are considered as part of our culture.

In the years that follow, other materials and designs were began to be used in the manufacture of necklaces. Sumerians, for example, who thrived in 2000BC, used alternative patterns of colored stones and gemstones, as well as metals like copper and silver in the creating them. The Classical Greek period-from about 480 to 300BC-on the other hand, began the use of three dimensional pendants mostly in the form of heads, seeds, and acorns. Today, various materials are being used in neck jewelry. Among these are strings of stones, beads, and jewels. Gold chains and silver necklaces are also among the popular types of neck ornaments today.

Necklaces are worn for various purposes. Some of the most popular reasons for wearing them include personal preference, social status, religion and belief with personal preference as the most common reason. These people use this piece of jewelry as adornment to complement their fashion style. Others, on the other hand, use them to signify their status in society like in the case of royals and nobles of the Early Monarch period of Europe. Moreover, there are also those individuals who use necklaces to show their religion and their beliefs. Examples of this are the Catholics who wear cross pendants on their neck to symbolize their belief in Christ and Native Americans who wear turquoise necklaces for good luck.

Today, as was stated earlier, necklaces can be purchased in a variety of designs and materials. Among the popular types worn be people today are rope chains, serpentines, and foxtails. Rope chains, as the name suggests, are necklaces with an appearance resembling that of a rope. They are composed of two chains twisted together to form a spiral design. Serpentine necklaces, on the other hand, are created from two links laid right next to each other while foxtails are composed of oval links made to face each other. Other popular types of neck jewelry are silver necklaces, chokers, bib necklaces, and gold and diamond necklaces.

Necklaces will always be part of who we are. No matter the type it is, even if it is a simple or a very expensive one which contains 234 pieces of diamonds like the one Napoleon Bonaparte gave to his second wife, necklaces are definitely here to stay.
