Identifying New Birds Is Not Always Easy

By Charlie Pate

There's a reason that more than 50 million U.S. residents enjoy the hobby of bird watching. It's because anyone can be a birder, and they don't have to spend much money to do so.

More than 50 million people in the United States list bird watching as a hobby. Many do it because they simply enjoy the beauty of multi-colored birds. Others do it as an excuse to savor the outdoors. And others enjoy birding as way to improve their photography skills.

Birding is an inexpensive hobby, too. You can spend as little - or as much, of course - on the hobby as you'd like. You can go birding with just your own eyes, or you can purchase a pair of binoculars and birding field guide. If you're able to spend more, you may want to invest in a nice camera to take pictures of the birds you spot.

Finally, you can bird no matter where you live. You don't have to reside in a rural environment. You'll be able to spot plenty of birds even if you live in the heart of a busy city.

In fact, you don't even have to leave your own backyard to go bird watching. You'd be surprised at how many different types of birds visit your own backyard. Sit on your deck or back porch one afternoon; just watch how many different-colored birds flit around your backyard.

It is helpful, though, to buy a good birding book. This will help you identify the birds you find on your birding adventures. It can be frustrating finding so many colorful birds through your binoculars' scopes, only to have no idea what types of flying creatures you're looking at.

You can also bring birds to your backyard by placing a bird bath or two in your yard. You may try bird feeders, too. Feeders are especially effective in drawing winter-time birds to your yard, as other sources of food are scarcer.

Turn your backyard into a bird sanctuary, and you'll never have to go far to enjoy the popular hobby of birding. Before you know it, you'll be hooked.
