The Main Reason Why Turtle Tattoos Considered Sacred

By Carlos Garcia

Thanks in part to young people, tattoos are actually a booming enterprise these days. After all, it is a grand way to give expression to personality or individuality. Add to this the idea that it is now widely accepted across all cultures in the universe. So, what do you think you might want? At this point turtle tattoos are extremely well-liked. So if you think you might get one of these, this is the article for you.

The turtle has been significant the world over for the longest time. For one thing, a turtle is a exceptional animal. Because of its shell, it's immune to predators or other dangers. And they can live to a very ripe age. So don't be surprised that people have been attaching such meanings to them.

Among Native Americans, for example, they can be regarded as very sacred. In many a tribal legend, they represent the creation of the world itself. There is a belief among the Huron, for example, that when the sky girl fell out of the world, when there was nothing but water everywhere, the animals took her to the shrewd turtle to see what was to be done. The turtle suggested soil grains to be put upon its shell. From this soil land grew, and the sky girl had a location. This land became the world that we all live in today.

This one example shows you how myths about turtles can become creation myths in a number of different cultures. Sometimes the turtle can be seen hauling the world on its back or perhaps just supporting it, holding it up.

Turtles are typically associated with such qualities as steadfastness or tranquility. But they can equally well stand for things like courage or endurance, or inner peace or security. And certainly, for longevity.

One of the tricks that artists have up their sleeves is to place this within a tattoo in the case of turtle tattoos. The shell can easily hold another design on top of it. The Japanese like to put unique characters there, which can stand for certain qualities, such as strength, for example.

But you are not, of course, confined to some Japanese character. You can choose something that has a singular and private meaning for you. That is, after all, why you want a it in the first place, to make it something that's singular just for you.

It can come in many forms. They can be small or large; it can even be extra large and very complex in its overall design.

Perhaps you can see by now why turtle tattoos have such popularity. If you think you would want to have one of your own, look for the design that you can really relate to. And do remember that personalizing or by adding something singular onto its shell is easy to do.
