Silk Ribbon Embroidery Tips And Tricks

By Debra Cooley

Undoubtedly, silk ribbon embroidery is one of the most stunning needlework techniques that result in elegance and luxurious three dimensional floral designs. It takes some practice, patience and skills in sewing to be good at it but is definitely worth the hard work. This provides some technique that will the beginners to get started.

You start with the preparatory process of selecting the right ribbon for you. Keep in mind to purchase one that is well made, possessing a bright color and is perfect for the pattern that you got. Pure silk ribbon is always the preferred pick but there are other good options that are available which includes rayon, satin and more. Cheaper ribbons in bargain stores may not be worth choice because their fabric is questionable and there is high a possibility that the color might bleed if it is wet. Remember to have a three meters of the material for each color.

You should consider on what ideal embroidery thread you will be using. The design and color should match with the thread that you have chosen. It is imperative that it is of the best quality to keep the ribbon down for a long period of time and after some washing.

Furthermore, the needle to be used will be carefully chosen as well. The recommended needles are chenille or tapestry. If you are stitching a tightly woven fabric chenille needle is ideal because it has a sharp point and a larger eye. On the other hand, a tapestry needle is recommend if you are stitching a sweater or using a loose woven fabric. This actually varies on the size of the ribbons.

When you start working always choose a short ribbon length for every session. Ribbons are known to fray easily, thus the shorter the length the better it is to avoid it from passing through the fabric more often. The recommended length is thirty centimeters or twelve inches.

Begin the sewing process by securing one centimeter tail on of each end of these ribbons securely positioned in the outer part of your fabric. You can stitch each of these tail ends on each other end by using a thin thread to sew through all them. It is important that they are secured in one place under the fabric without any bumps.

Keep in mind not to hold down these threads tightly. Loosen up the tension when you started knitting them to keep these ribbons from fraying. This keep the contour of every stitches and avoid it from pulling out of shape.

Finally, prevent any occurrence of twisting as you work with the ribbons. You can achieve it by making every stitch on the fabric. Securing that in place by your thumb and then pulling those ribbons through on the exact same time.

One last tip, you make sure you have a clean hand when stitching the silk ribbon embroidery. There is a lot of other purposes that this embroidery will serve you such as for book and dishes cover, decorative pillows and even jewelry like brooches and pendant. It entirely depends on how creative you are and who knows you might come up with a new purpose of it.
