Hunting T-Shirts Represent An Ancient Tradition

By Roger Bendis

It has been four hours since you woke up this morning, and you stifle yet another yawn. It would be much easier to just lean back against the tree and doze for a bit. It's so peaceful here in the deep of the woods, that you could rest here for hours and never be disturbed. Resting isn't what you're here for, however. You are here to hunt, and that's what you intend to do. You peel off your gloves and use your deer call to signal your prospective prey. Without any of the pomp and splendor due to a true king of the forest, a buck walks quietly into view. You hastily rub the moisture off your hands onto the favorite of your hunting t-shirts, and get ready to deal your killing blow.

That's what the whole thing is for, fellow hunters. You can buy all of your fancy equipment and have a whole closet full of hunting t-shirts, but none of it matters until you experience the feeling of that fired shot that takes down a magnificent example of the deer species. If you've never felt that complicated, wonderful sensation then you will never understand why hunters do what they do. Our very existence depended upon our ability to track, hunt, and kill animals for their food. There is a sacredness to the act that no one but the hunters of the world understand.

The killing of an animal isn't what the whole process is all about. There are those who would have you believe that every man with a gun and some hunting t-shirts is a sociopath murderer who torture animals for fun. The truth is that when a hunter makes a kill, that they strive to make the cleanest kill possible. Through the chest, through the heart, and through both lungs. The animal is dead before it even has a chance to register that it is in pain. The real meaning behind the hunt is because in many people, there is a need to satisfy that ancient impulse to dominate nature and to hunt for your food. The same people who condemn hunters, usually go home to eat cows or chicken slaughtered in inhumane conditions.

The kills that a hunter makes, he earns. It is not something so simplified as strolling through the woods, whistling a happy tune, wearing hunting t-shirts, and killing deer as you come across them. Hunting is difficult and takes much more discipline than its critics give it credit for. Hunting should be done when the deer are most active, which means waking up hours before dawn so that you can be in place when the deer are out. Deer spook very easily, so noise discipline is a must. There are hunters who spend several hours in one place and never fire a shot. These are the willing sacrifices hunters make to practice their sport.

I will grant you that there are bad hunters out there that kill because they enjoy taking trophies and ending lives. I know that is true, but there are far more of us who hunt for all of the right reasons. The best reason to hunt is because you want to kill your own game. Bringing home meat for the table fulfills the deepest need in the male gender, and that is to provide food for the family unit. When I bring home a butchered animal that will feed my family for weeks, I am proud of what I did. That's why I do not hesitate to wear my hunting t-shirts out in public, no matter who it may offend. I am the hunter, and I will never be anything else.
