Andy Rooney once said, "I don't like food that's too carefully arranged; it makes me think that the chef is spending too much time arranging and not enough time cooking. If I wanted a picture, I'd buy a painting."

The truth is chefs prepare some delicious meals and someone must deliver them to those who can't come to the restaurant to eat them or want them for parties. That's the job of the caterer.

Which are the skills required to be a good caterer?

You must start out being a quality fanatic, you must have communication skills, you need to be able to move perishable items effectively, you have to be a master planner, and you have skills as an entrepreneur.

Catering means you know the food business. You have to have the skills of a master chef so you can prepare those special items most people want at their parties or other get togethers. This job cannot be done just by any cook. You need to be a master chef with experience, dedication and practice.

Skills for social interaction is essential for catering. You need to deal with different customers with their unique requirements. So a look to understand your customer's needs, how they want them met and when they need them. Any problems should be met with understanding and a quick solution. Remember, a smile always helps.

The effective handling and movement of perishable food items is important aspect of catering. This is a special skill acquired by practice and experience. It requires the right equipment, transportation, and attitude.

Catering means you have to be a master planner. You need to handle several orders and ensure that the time schedule is managed. Not only is timing essential in comedy, it is required for any caterer. You may have to take the assistance of computers and staff for this. Either learn the programs yourself or hire someone.

Catering means you have to think on your feet. Often the clients may require your opinion about instant changes in menus to suit the occasion. You may then need to think and act quickly.

You need to have the quality of an entrepreneur to run catering. Times are changing. You may need to improvise with changing times. Always remember to be cost effective. You have to be up on what people want and might need. Master these skills and you will be able to serve people with quality food you enjoy preparing, doing it efficiently, on time with a smile on your face.
