Soy Candle Burning Tips

By Melissa Hall

Soy candles must be burned the right way for safety and to get a quality burn from them. Here are some tips on how to burn soy candles.

Soy candle wax has what's called a memory. That means that when you burn a soy candle and then extinguish it, the next time you burn it, the soy candle wax will melt across as far as it did the first time.

Because of this, it is best to allow a soy candle to melt all the way across to the edge of the jar on the first burn session. This prevents your candle from tunneling as it burns, leaving excess wax on the edge of the jar. You should burn soy candles one hour for every inch wide of the candle. So a 3 inch wide candle container would need to be allowed to burn for three hours or more to get a nice melt pool.

The fragrance of the scented soy candles is in the melt pool. The best melt pool will allow for the best fragrance throw. I always try for about 1/4 in. deep melt pool in my candles when burning.

A melt pool that is too shallow will not release the ideal amount of fragrance from the candle. A melt pool that is too deep means the wick is too large for the size candle and is burning too hot so the soy wax burns too fast and you'll have to trim the wick much more often.

Keeping your soy candles away from drafts will prevent smoking and soot. Soy candles usually do not smoke and create very little soot if any, but as with any candle, they can smoke and cause soot when exposed to drafts.

Trimming your wick to 1/4 of an inch also prevents smoking and soot.

And most important of all, make sure to keep your soy candles away from anything that could catch fire, and away from children and pets.
