Life drawing is arguably one of the most difficult forms of art as we know it. A life drawing is a piece that has been created from observing a live model, a photograph, a skeletal model or from memory and imagination. However, more often than not, it is composed from a real life model, with a strong focus on the human form as opposed to the context or subject matter. In fact, life drawing and the human figure are enduring themes within the art world, with classes all over the country dedicated to the cause.
There are a number of famous life drawing artists, including the likes of Ingres, Rembrandt, Giorgione, Goya, Picasso, Gauguin, Etty and Freud. Rembrandt is particularly favourable and is regarded as one of the all time greats of his profession. There really are some stunning pieces within his portfolio, of which approximately 1,500 still remain to this day.
Saying that, however, there are no fewer than twenty five Rembrandt works that are actually signed. Never-the-less, his work is extremely captivating, almost as though you are reading a journal of his thoughts. There is a certain sense of spontaneity throughout his work; work which is simple, but enthralling at the same time. He was such an interesting figure, not one that was born into wealth and class, but one who set out his own path in life, utilising his near-miraculous skill. He actually started out in Amsterdam and married a beautiful, rich woman. Then came his commission for 'Night Watch', but that is another story in itself!
Pablo Picasso is another favourite amongst the great life drawers, one who had a very different upbringing to Rembrandt. Pablo demonstrated superior talent in his early years, painting in such a realistic manner, which he most likely inherited from his father; a painter who originally specialised in natural depictions of birds.
If you are interested in learning more about the history of life drawing and would also like to try your hand at it, you must enrol in one of the many laid-back classes dedicated to its discipline. Private Member's Club, Home House of London, are putting on a fantastic class on Sunday 23rd September 2012. The team from London Life Drawing will be running the class, which is suitable for beginners to the more experienced. Starting at 10.30am and ending at approximately 4pm, all materials and a light lunch will be provided. Located in the beautiful Eating Room in the quintessentially Georgian townhouse that is Home House, the lavish decor and ambience will be sure to inspire you in your artistic quest.
