Natural Art Ideas for Kids

By Dawn Marcotte

Many families enjoy outdoor activities throughout the year. Going to the beach, playing in the yard or visiting a local park provide opportunities to be creative and make some art. These three natural art ideas can be done on location at your families favorite outdoor location.

Beach Art

Beaches are a popular family destination and they are one of the simplest places for natural crafts. Making sand castles are a popular pastime for kids of all ages. Challenge the family to make something other than the standard castle. Older kids can sculpt whatever they can imagine and draw. Bring a stick or ruler to use to draw the outline in the sand above the water line. Bring the wet sand needed for the sculpture to the outline and create the sculpture. Start with a simple star shape or be more daring and try making a snowman from the sand. Once the kids have learned the steps to creating a new sculpture they can try more elaborate ideas such as mermaids and octopus. Don't forget to take a picture of the completed project.

Yard Art

Many kids enjoy playing outside in their own yard. Encourage them to be creative by giving them several small people, action figure size and ask them to create a city for these people. They can use any natural item they can find. Leaves, sticks, nuts, rocks, grass and flowers can all be used to make a city for the tiny people.

If the kids aren't interested in making a city have them gather flat natural objects they find interesting or beautiful to be used to make rubbings. Simply place the leaf or flower on a flat surface; lay a piece of paper over the top and rub a crayon over the paper. The crayon should create the texture of the item underneath.

Playground Art

The range of items available for natural art projects can be more limited in a park. Bring sidewalk chalk if the park has any hard surfaces such as cement or blacktop. This will give the kids an extra activity to do alone or with other kids at the park. Encourage the kids to use the natural items to play games such as Tic-tac-toe. They can use items they find to create a free-form sculpture too. Bring paint brushes and water so the kids can use the water as the paint to create wet pictures. The pictures will disappear when the water dries.

These are only three ways to help kids create fun art while they are enjoying spending time outside with the family or their friends.
