Bring Back The Past With Old Metal Signs

By Corinne Hyde

Old metal signs were first seen in the 19th century when they were painted by hand and used to advertise a myriad of different products. As the century wore on, they began to be lithographed and were hung outside stores to help sell the items inside. Everything from food, beer and soft drinks to detergents and gasoline were all advertised in this manner. There are collectors today who spend large amounts of money for signage which is still in good condition.

The images on this signage were very bold in color and designed to attract the maximum attention. Companies vied with one another with their eye-catching, realistic pictures. World War II meant that production of signage of this nature stopped and much of that already in use was melted down. After the war, steel and plastic were used instead.

Collectors go to great lengths and expense to obtain this type of signage for their collections. There are some which are more desirable than others such as those with images rather than words. Images of women and of pets are particularly popular.

Sometimes it may be difficult for a collector to determine the authenticity of an item. Some knowledge and research is needed. Of course sometimes the date of production is stamped on the item. Most of these items were exposed to the elements so they are rusted.

Today there has been a huge revival of interest in vintage items of all types. Many individuals are using them for decor purposes in their homes and business owners are using them in the work environment. They are even being used for decorating at retro parties and celebrations.

Manufacturers have picked up on this interest. The genuine article may be too pricey for most budgets but reproductions of many popular signs are widely available. They can be mounted easily as they usually have drilled holes and they also have hemmed edges for safety.

There is the option of having an original sign custom made to meet the specific needs of an individual. Slogans, logos, digital photos and graphics can be printed directly onto the metal. This ensures a unique, vintage looking sign.

Home owners are enjoying adding antique signage to any room to create feelings of warmth, nostalgia and humor. Not only do they contribute to the appearance of a room, they can be very practical too as they are durable and resistant to damage. This makes them ideal for workshops and high humidity areas, where signage made of other materials could be easily torn or discolored.

Many businesses today are decorating with retro signage as well. They can put up humorous messages which put across a certain warning message, whilst at the same time bringing a smile. Food themed signage is being used in restaurants or cafeterias to bring a distinctive touch to the decor.

Old metal signs are valued by collectors who pay a great deal for the right item. They are also appreciated by those who cannot afford originals but are happy to buy reproductions which add a distinctive touch to their decor whether it is inside or outside.
