Hookah and Hookah Bars

By Hookah Joe

Over the last decade hookahs have started gaining a great deal of popularity in the U.S. In simple terms, a hookah bar is a business establishment where patrons share shisha tobacco through a smoking device referred to as a "hookah". There are a lot of Hookah bars in towns in the U.S.

A Look at The History

Hookah and the idea of hookah bars originated five centuries ago in the subcontinent near where today is the border of India and Pakistan. Hookah bars are principally linked to the middle east since it was the origin of hookah and the region from where hookah gained a lot of popularity. Hookah bars became popular in the Middle East as the places where people used to socialize and smoke hookah with others.

Exactly What Does A Hookah Bar Seem Like?

Bars that are designed to imitate the region of origin of hookah have generally Arab people running them. The furnishings are according to the Middle Eastern culture of Indian culture. A few are simple, and may not provide extra items. But some multifunctional bars offer snack foods, coffee and sodas as well. Typical community lounges don't have liquor licenses and so do not derive profit from alcohol. However, in larger cities, many trendier businesses serve alcohol, generally with a full bar available for cocktails, wine, and beer. It isn't uncommon to see belly dancers, live bands, or DJs in the more upscale urban hookah bars since they resemble a "night club" more closely than a community social establishment.

Hookah bars that are near institutions tend to be more casual and draw in a lot of students. Hookah is thought to be less dangerous than smoking cigarettes, cigars or other things and so hookahs are gaining a great deal of popularity. Hookah bars do well around colleges as college life is a time to try new stuff and enjoy the independence of life. The cities which are famous for having a lot of secondary education institutions in the U.S. have noticed a great increase in the popularity of hookah bars.

Let's Discuss a Hookah

Now you must be wondering what a hookah is? What is so special about this device that it is becoming popular all across the globe. Hookah was invented by a Persian physician in the late 1500's. It was named as a "huqqa". This name has stayed with this device since then, however, as this device traveled around the world it gained many other names like hubble-bubble and nargile.

Whilst the primitive hookah was much different, probably constructed from coconut shells, the result has always been the same: purify and cool the smoke by passing it through water before inhalation. The structure of the hookah has 4 main parts:

1. Bowl - to keep the tobacco.

2. Body - smoke produced from the burning tobacco is passed through the body to reach the water basin.

3. Water Basin - here the smoke goes through the water. After purifying the smoke remains in a chamber over the water.

4. Hose - after the purified smoke reaches the chamber, the smoker inhales deeply through the hose connected into the water basin. The hose can be up to many meters long.

Thick, cool and fragrant smoke comes out of the hookah.

A customer of a hookah bar in Turkey once said:

"What you put in the hookah matters not, but who is along with you while you are smoking. It's a whole experience. You'll find, good, old, intriguing and all kinds of people in a bar like this. Hookahs bars will remain in the world so long as people wish to take out time to enjoy the company of their good friends."
