Kenya Holiday:Guide to Kenya and African Holidays

By John Roney

Situated between Ethiopia (to the north) and Tanzania (to the south) lies the unspoilt Kenya with world famous safari parks and glorious sandy beaches. Kenya is split up into eight provinces which can further be split down into districts. There were sixty nine in total according to the last census in 1999. The eight provinces are: Central, Coastal, Nairobi, Eastern, North Eastern, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western. As well as having the provinces to explore, Kenya also has several busy cities if you would prefer to escape and indulge in a spot of retail therapy.

Kenyan markets and shopping are things that may rarely be considered when thinking about the country, but in actual fact it is a veritable smorgasbord out there, with many fine shops and markets to cater for everyone's taste. Start off with a trip to the capital city, Nairobi, and think about the kind of items you may want to acquire. One thing that Kenya is known for is the beautiful cloth that comes out of the country. Head down to Biashara Street and have a look at the range of fabric shops available, so you can choose a lovely piece to take home.

Designing a Workable Practical, Enjoyable Safari Itinerary, The design of your safari holiday program is an important aspect of your overall safari experience. From your operator, demand and ensure the program flows in such a manner that your time is not wasted driving or generally traveling between destinations. This calls for putting together a program that takes into consideration the road conditions and the distances both in space and time between the various destinations you would be visiting.

Pack your Holiday Kit Well, including clothing, Depending on your type of vacation and interest, there will be some items expected of you to have, so that you can enjoy your safari vacation. For example, bird-watching persons will need telescopes in addition to the binoculars. Wildlife lovers may just need binoculars. Others may be a guidebook, checklist, diving equipment, climbing equipment, etc. In most of the cases, your safari operator will be able to provide these things, either as part of the package or at a fee. But it is helpful to clarify these issues during the inquiry and planning stages. Needless to say, clothing is part of your vacation kit and this will depend on the climatic conditions at the time of the year you choose to travel. Deciding on Type of Accommodation and Transportation Options, The choice of accommodation and mode of transportation is connected to the budget you have. But it is important to make a choice and decision whether you want to stay in a safari tented camp, safari lodges or budget tents pitched on temporary grounds. Opting to travel by road or by air also has an implication not only on your comfort but also on price.

Deciding on Activities to include and 'must see' Things Enjoyment of your safari vacation will also depend the type of activities that are included in your safari program. For example, if you would like to see the Kenyan tribes living according to the old, traditional ways, you might want to include a visit to an authentic cultural village. If you are looking for close contact with the African wilderness, you might be advised to include a safari walk, nature walk or bush walk. A hot air balloon over the Masai Mara or Amboseli is another way of spicing up your safari. There are many more ideas that you can add on to your program to make it memorable.
