Beaded jewellery making - anyone can do it

By Amy Houston

For people who find beaded jewellery in shops too expensive, and who also find it very time-consuming to track down items that suit their style, there may be another way to indulge a passion for beaded jewellery. Why not make your own? It is fun, creative and far cheaper than buying beaded jewellery from a shop.

Many people find that designing and making their own jewellery is a great hobby, and a really fun and creative way to spend their time. With a little skill and a few basic tools and supplies, you can make your own jewellery so that you never have to spend your precious time shopping for it ever again.

It isn't necessary to have any advanced or specialist skills (like metalworking, for example) in order to make your own beaded jewellery. You also won't need any power tools or expensive pieces of equipment. All you need are some basic tools and supplies, which are easy to come across and cheap to buy.

An experienced beaded jewellery maker will have many different tools in their collection, from chain or flat pliers, round nose pliers and crimping pliers to an awl (used for knotting), a set of wire cutters and a bead board. You will also need sharp scissors, tweezers, measuring tape, a hammer and good quality adhesives.

You don't necessarily need everything on the list of equipment to make basic pieces of jewellery, but one or two will be very helpful. This is especially the case if you want to turn your hobby into a home business.

With all of the tools and equipment sorted, it's now time for you to choose your beads. This can be really fun, as there are thousands of different types of crystal beads, glass beads, acrylic beads and pearl beads out there. Simply look online and take your pick.
