Silk Ribbon Embroidery Is Fun And Simple To Learn

By Essie Osborn

Learning a needle-craft is an enjoyable way to fill in time and it can result in some beautiful hand-made projects one can proudly show off. A modern spin on a traditional stitching technique, silk ribbon embroidery gracefully combines delicate ribbon and colorful embroidery floss in an artful and creative way that adds a whimsical charm to any clothing item or household decorative piece.

Given it's uncomplicated nature, this type of needlework is easy enough for even a child to learn. The stitches are very straightforward and only basic supplies are required. Even someone who has never done any kind of work like this before should have no problem mastering it in a short time. It isn't tricky or frustrating and most people who do it end up finishing the projects they start.

There are numerous ways a person can learn this craft, it depends on what specific learning style works best for him or her. Visual aids are a popular method, this includes online tutorials which are videos of someone actually going through the process step-by-step. Some people prefer to attend a class, and others find that learning from a book can also teach this skill effectively.

Choosing a pattern is the first step, it's best for beginners to select one which is less complex. Assembling all the supplies required for making the project will be the next thing one must do. The pattern should list the specific amount of each color thread that is needed, but it is not necessary to follow this exactly if one wishes to use different colors. Other supplies needed include tracing paper, marking pencils, embroidery hoop, pincushion, a pair of sharp, small scissors, silk ribbon, usually the 4 millimeter size, and embroidery floss.

The most suitable type of needle for this kind of stitching is the chenille needle, which has a larger eye, making them easy to thread, and also have sharp tips. If beaded embellishments are added, a size 12 beading or long applique needle will be best. Having several needles already threaded with the colors needed will make things easier than threading one needle each time another color is called for.

Different kinds of fabric can be used for embroidering, as long as the needle will go through it. Thicker fabrics may require a larger needle, such as a size 13. Stretchy knits may need some interfacing attached to the wrong side to provide extra stability. Using genuine silk ribbon is always better than synthetic varieties because it not only looks nicer but is also easier to work with.

Cleaning of completed projects must be done with caution in order to not spoil them. The silk ribbon should always be pre-washed prior to use, because the dyes it contains tend to bleed. If this is done, it should be safe to wash embroidered items in cold water with mild soap. Ironing, if needed, must be done on low heat and with minimal pressure.

What's nice about this method of embroidery is that anyone, young or old, female or male can learn and become accomplished at it. It is a great way to create unique, creative expression through beautiful finished pieces one can keep for years. The other thing many people appreciate about it is that it is easy to correct any mistakes.
