An Overview Of Spun Glass Figurines

By Kathryn Neal

Spun glass figurines are very collectible items and have been a particularly popular collector's item for many years throughout history. Many people become so enthusiastic that they watch out for the latest figurines to add to their collection. They are made by heating rods of glass and then bending and stretching the fine filaments before they cool and harden. The figurines may be made to be clear all over or may be coloured to provide even more interest. A bunch of flowers, for example, being held by a figurine or blossom entwined in a fairies hair may look very different in colour rather than just a clear finish. Some items lend themselves to remain clear and would not be so effective in colour.

This type of material lends itself to the creation of fantasy items such as angels, elves, fairies and dragons. A common item is Cinderella's g;ass slipper or her carriage. The carriage may be designed to include the horses. Either of the pieces may be manufactured to include pieces of gold or silver to make them more attractive.

Many items are created as gifts for special occasions. These include 'Birthdays', 'Weddings', 'New Baby', 'Engagement', 'Mother's Day' and others. A filigree effect can be achieved with this method of creation which is suitable for delicate gifts such as baby bootees. These can be left plain or for additional interest ribbon can sometimes be threaded through the glass pieces in pink or blue.

Silver or gold bases are often provided to display a figurine at its best. Designs also include whales and dolphins in all sizes and also may be available as single pieces or pieces incorporating groups of dolphins or whales. All types of tropical fish have been created and displayed in lots of differing settings. Some items have been made to include the owner's birthstone. Every type of animal imaginable has probably been designed using this product.

These type of creations have bean around for many years and vintage examples throughout the ages are frequently available at auctions for sale.

A variety of designs are available both large and small. Decorations, vases and table lamps are made with this product. Some include LED's to provide colour and light .

Collectors sometimes have bespoke cabinets made to display their pieces to their best effect. Others buy ready made display cabinets but the method of storage is important to protect the pieces from damage. As these items are intricate dust can be a problem and therefore gently brushing them with a very soft brush may be beneficial for its removal.

Most manufacturers of these pieces will provide advise about the best method of cleaning the item. These instructions should be adhered to as although the piece may be made mainly of glass other material may have been incorporated. For example if gold, silver or other metallic substance has been included in its manufacture the metal could become tarnished if not cared for properly.

The fine filaments of glass used for the creation of these pieces also have other uses. They can be used with plastics or polyester resins where strength is required

In addition to the creation of spun glass figurines if a textile manufacturer wishes to add a shine to his products he may use the filaments for this purpose. The filaments are woven within the fabric to give a shine or sheen.
