Name A Star, The Ultimate Romantic Gift

By Isaura Downey

Since the dawn of time humans have stared up to the heavens with wonder. For generations couples have looked up, found a point of light and decided to name a star after their loved one. Now this can be formally done, a certificate is generated and the identity stored in a database. While scientists will always prefer standardised designations a single repository of names collects the personalised stars to ensure it is preserved for generations.

It's even possible to get two stars together. With the romantic imagery of naming a star there's something extra special about viewing a pair of stars and knowing that they are named after yourself and your partner. This would make a perfect wedding gift or anniversary present. Rather than fantasizing about having one named after your beloved you could see it for yourself. It would add a personal touch to using a telescope.

The stars are real. Standard packages restrict any selection so the selected star could be anywhere in either hemisphere. While this is satisfactory for some people other prefer to pay a little bit more and be assured that it can be seen with the naked eye from their home city. All of the stars are viewable using software that functions as a home planetarium.

Every new star name is launched into space with a copy of the photo. The photos are packaged together and launched periodically. Knowing that you are part of a space launch and mission, even in the smallest way, adds a unique connection with outer space.

There are very few restrictions. Names up to 39 characters allow most people and groups to pick out a name that accurately represents them. Groups of teams have the choice of listing names or purchasing a cluster of stars. A few longer coined names may need multiple stars, for example a Welsh railway station has an exceptionally long name that would require two stars to complete. For most other communities this wouldn't be an issue.

Stars have always been one of the greatest mysteries. They are often the subject of a song and encourage a lot of imagination. Nobody knows what planets circle the star, nor if there is life. This is how the genre of science fiction lubricates the imagination.

Fantasy can now be turned into reality. Looking at the sky and finding a stellar object with your name on it or that of a loved one is an incredibly special feeling. It's now possible to name a star and keep the memory of a moment for a lifetime.
