Things To Consider When It Comes To Family Car Safety

By Bruce Jopples

Many people think about family car safety every day. Making sure that a vehicle is properly maintained can often avoid potential accidents. It is also a good idea to be prepared for possible emergency situations.

First of all, it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for regular maintenance. A general rule of thumb is to have the fluids and filters checked about every three to five thousand miles. Also be sure that the battery; as well as, all plugs, wires, and hoses remain in good condition. You should also make sure that the horn; as well, as all other lights and signals are working properly at all times.

Maintaining the appropriate air pressure in the tires is also essential. The tires should also be rotated occasionally, and the treads checked at least once a month. Be sure to check all four tires, as the treads can vary in wear and tear. The brake fluid and brake pads should be checked regularly as well. It is imperative that worn tires and brake pads are changed as needed.

Even though a vehicle may be safe to drive, there is always the chance that an emergency may come up. It is a good idea to keep a spare tire and a jack in the vehicle. Also it is recommended that every vehicle has some type of emergency kit handy. This should include flashlights, emergency flares, jumper cables and a first aid kit at minimum. There may be additional items individual families may need to include, such as medications, infant needs or other personal items.

It is highly recommended that all passengers wear seat belts, and that you have all children restrained properly in child safety seats. You can often find information regarding your specific laws and regulation at your local department of motor vehicles. You should also periodically check to make sure that all seat belts and child seats are in good condition, and replace any damaged items as soon as possible.

Distractions can often lead to accidents. It is recommended that drivers not perform tasks that may distract them while driving. In some cases, it can even be against the law. Children should also have a clear understanding about what type of behavior is expected while the vehicle is in motion, and why it is important. Although not all distractions can be avoided, it is at least a good idea to educate them as much as possible.

When it comes to family car safety, there are several hazards that can be avoided, by simply maintaining the vehicle as recommended, and following the local safety laws and regulations. It is also important to discuss car safety with all family members, and make sure that everyone is properly restrained. Most importantly, the driver's attention should remain focused on driving at all times.
