Making Important Home Improvement Decisions

By Joseph Spelnick

There is no doubt that a home improvement project can completely change the allover look of a residence. You may decide to change things in a kitchen, add on a room or make other alterations. To make these changes with good results there are several things that need to be considered.

Primarily, determining the extent of the project and its costs is essential. The next step is to determine if it is a do-it-yourself job or a professional is needed. On major changes, such as erecting or moving walls, changing electricity or plumbing, hiring a professional is important.

Hiring an experienced building professional has several advantages. They will take care of needed permits and be able to complete the job quickly and professionally. It will also eliminate the possibility of any fire insurance problems which might result from improper electrical work you do yourself.

Unfortunately, because there are so many dishonest people in the business, it is important that the contractor's credentials be checked. They need to have a proper license and be bonded as well as guarantee their work. By checking the State Licensing Board and the contractor's website this can quickly be determined.

Before signing any agreement make sure that it states the total cost of the project and a completion date. Not doing this can result in add-on costs as well as completion being delayed. The majority of contractors are honest people and excellent at their job but there are always exceptions.

When trying to determine a budget for the project, if doing it yourself, check with a home improvement store regarding costs and advice. If hiring a contractor, have them give you a cost estimate. This kind of work can greatly improve the appearance, value and comfort of your home.
