Is Backyard Beekeeping Something Real?

By Ayafoue Couassi

Backyard Beekeeping is not an utopia. While it is possible to keep honey bees in a backyard, I believe that it can be advantageous to get some information about this hobby before purchasing the bees. In this article, I would like to share three main points about beekeeping. For more, please continue to read.

Before taking the steps needed to keep bees in your yard, I would advise to check the regulations in the place where you live. I would expect that it leads to more peace of mind to know that a person is abiding by the rules. Consequently it is better to know if you have the right to raise honey bees in your home before you start buying anything.

Let's say that a beekeeper has checked and it is possible to keep bees in a backyard where he/she lives. Now, I would like to share with you some information about this hobby.

Bees, similarly to us need water. Based on what I have learned, if the bees do not have enough water near the hive, they may go to a neighbor swimming pool to get this water. Of course, this situation does not appear to be the best case scenario. As a result, the person who wants to raise bees in his/her backyard should provide a source of water not far from the hive.

In fact, the beekeeper could install a source of water in the backyard. Placing water not far from the hive could prevent that he honey bees go somewhere else to get water. This could be done with the use of inverted jars. What is something else that a beekeeper could do?

Secondly, raising a fence could also be done. Please note that the fence should be of at least 6 ft tall. Interestingly, this installation could lead to more than one advantage. Effectively, due to the fence, the hive could be hidden. As a person can imagine, everyone is not fond of bees. As a result, hiding the hive could be beneficial. Moreover, the fence could lead the bees to fly higher. Consequently, there may be a lower probability that he bees enter in collision with people.

Another point I would like to touch on concerns tools that could be used to keep bees. In fact, there are several tools that can be associated with this hobby. Some of these tools are the uncapping fork, the hive tool, the smoker, the veil and the beekeeping suit. The uncapping fork can be used to open the cells filled with honey. Actually, after the cells are filled with honey, the bees may cap these cells. In order to open these cells, the uncapping fork can be employed. Secondly, the hive tool can be utilized to remove stuck woodwork for example from sections of the hive. The natural glue also can be removed with the hive tool. Thirdly, the smoker is equipment employed to calm down the bees. The veil and the beekeeping suit are ways through which a beekeeper may attempt to protect his/her body.

A person does not have to know everything about beekeeping before starting. I hope that this article contained valuable information.
