Why Picking A Lock May Be A Good Thing

By Eileen Lee

We all know how it feels to be locked out of our house or car. It seems like a helpless situation. In Chicago, if you ever find yourself locked out of the car, you can pick up the yellow pages and call a Chicago locksmith. I'm sure it works similarly in other locations. With a locksmith, you can be on your way in a matter of minutes. However you will most likely pay a premium under such situations.

There is an alternative to calling a locksmith. It may sound strange but you can learn how to pick a lock by learning a few techniques and watching a few videos. From a bike lock, to a gym locker, your house, and many other manual locks, you can learn how to get into most locks with just a few tools.

Now I say this with a caveat because the lock that you get into may be rendered useless if you break it or if you use the techniques for unscrupulous purposes. So if you end up in a situation where you need to get into a lock and do not want to call a locksmith, why not learn how to pick a lock?

A lock picking kit can be found through a simple search on the internet. Follow that up with a search for a bump key and you will see how easy it is to get into plenty of locks. With something as simple as a bobby pin and paperclip, you can get into a gym locker or a file cabinet. Sometimes a torsion wrench and a small piece of metal along with learning about the pin and tumbler design will be enough to know to get into your own home.

Many skills come to those who take the time and put in the effort to learn. Picking a lock is no exception. Just think about how a locksmith learned his craft. He took classes and practiced along the way. Now if you ever find yourself with a need to get into your own home or car, hopefully you've gained that skill as well.
