Creating A Haven For Nature Lovers With A Wild Bird Feeder

By Debra Garrison

Mother Nature provides many beautiful types of scenery that can, for the most part, be freely enjoyed by all. Among the most pleasant sights in nature is that of fowls of the air swooping down to the earth and perching to feed. Many gardeners use a wild bird feeder to capture this moment.

Areas that are designed to attract wild birds can be found in many gardens. They often comprise feeders that are designed to be attractive to the birds as well as hold the food they love. The feeders can be man-made or commercially made depending on the tastes, needs and desires of the individual.

For quick and easy setup of the feeding device, a store bought item is the best choice. There is a wide range of designs, sizes and colours to choose from. The material used to make the device is very important as the concerns of buyers are typically twofold. Buyers tend to look for the ones that are durable and nature friendly. Material such as clay and wood are preferred by those who consider environmentally safe material as the main criteria for selecting a feeder.

Creating a feeding device is not difficult either. The simplest devices can prove very effective in encouraging birds to come to your green space. One simple idea is a transparent bottle with feeding vents, hung from a branch or placed on a very visible point.

The location for the installation of a feeding device of this nature must be selected strategically. One of the first things to look at is the area that the birds already frequent. Placing the device in that area will encourage an increase in the frequency of the visits as well as the numbers of birds that visit. If birds naturally gravitate towards a particular tree for instance, it may be wise to mount a feeding device on a sturdy branch of that tree. Remember though that the device must be accessible for refills when the feed runs out.Aesthetic appeal is another factor that must be considered when choosing a location for the device.

Probably more important than the design and fabric of the feeders is the type of feed with which they are filled. This is so because what is placed inside the feeder will determine whether the birds come towards it. It will also determine the numbers and types of birds that flock the devices.

The great thing about untamed birds is that they eat pretty much anything that they can forage in their natural environment. This makes feeding them a simple and economical task as many of their food can be gathered from the surroundings. It is important though to do some checks into the type of food consumed by each bird so as to strategically load the feeder to attract the specific species.

There are numerous reasons to incorporate a wild bird feeder feature in a garden or natural area. Just as numerous are the benefits that can be derived from having such a feature. Installing one in your garden or green space is likely to make the space a better place for all users.
