Crafting An Excellent Space Game

By Pattie S. Schaefer

There are many space game design teams that work hard to produce intelligent, challenging, and entertaining games for players and gaming fans around the world. Today's video game market is gigantic and encompasses millions of gamers, each of whom prefer a specific type of game in a certain genre. Younger games normally prefer simple games that do not present extreme mental challenges but instead are fun and moderately easy; adult gamers tend to prefer more difficult games that push their minds to the creative limit. In an effort to get to their target audience and make their latest games as popular as possible, modern game makers spend a lot of time designing every aspect of their new releases.

A space game can be crafted around a moderately common gaming concept, such as a first person shooter or a strategy game, and then enhanced with creative features conceived by the game's designers. This includes coming up with the main storyline behind the events of the game and creating characters that will resonate with gamers while playing. This can be challenging, as they have to fit the character's design with the type of gamer they are trying to entertain; children will prefer simple, fun characters while adults like to relate to their game's characters and see them as both realistic and complex.

Another challenge encountered by a space game design team is creating the game's overall background setting. Science fiction themes are usually used and classics of the genre are adapted to fit new games; it is hard for designers to balance the desire to create a familiar setting that will remind gamers of other sci-fi adventures with the desire to make a totally unique game. The game's images, such as backgrounds, enemies, and player characters, must all be prepared as concept art before they can be programmed into the actual game.

Even once a game has been designed and programmed, a lot of testing must be done to ensure that gameplay will keep gamers entertained. Many hours are invested doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

A lot of hard work goes into designing a space game in the hopes that it will be a hit amongst sci-fi gaming fans. A great game is a nice example of the product that can be put out when a design team works together and gets creative.
