Easy Steps To Make Paper Flowers

By Darryyl W Whitezgh

Tissue paper flowers are a traditional decorative item with multifunctional purposes. Children can also join in on the fun during the holiday season creating flower designs from bright colored sheeting. Whether you require cost effective decorative items for events or simply wish to bring color into the home, this craft can be performed in a few easy steps.

The material that you will need to create these decorations include tissue paper, pipe cleaners or flexible wire and scissors. You may include additional items such as glitter or ribbon for truly unique creations. The first step to creating your flower is to lay the tissue paper in a variety of desired colors on top of each other on a flat surface with all the corners and creases aligned as close as possible.

Using the scissors measure rectangles of between 5 to 6 inches and cut these in stacks of 6 to 8 layers. If you wish bigger and fuller flowers then be sure to cut according to such requirements. Be sure to stack the material so that every corner and every crease will be in alignment and begin to fold in terms of an accordion style.

The reason for the accordion style of folding is to develop the petals later on. The folded stack should have the wire turned around the tissues. Once this step is completed cut the end to resemble the top of a triangle leaving you with a stack resembling a picket fence post. There is the option of cutting the trim before it is folded however; this may prove to be difficult in terms of a straight edge.

Proceed to fold the stack in half and where the center is identified wrap the wire or piping around this area. The folded edges will be used to create the petals and from the folded stack the edges need to be pulled out from the center in a gentle manner to create a fan effect. Petals will resemble a flower once all of the layers have been successfully pulled out.

You should begin to see the formation of the flower so keep pulling in upward strokes from the center until all the folds have been pulled out. It should be attached to the pipe cleaner or floral wire. Once it has been turned around, it should resemble the shape of a flower.

Creative aspects include the placement of shiny objects such as glittery buttons in the center of the flower for a more realistic appearance. Glitter may be added to the petals by gently placing glue on the material and sprinkling over. The creation of tissue paper flowers may be a great idea for the holidays and is certainly a craft for the entire family.
