Sports Handicapping Is Carried Out All Over The World

By Veronica James

Enthusiasts from all over the world are brought together with their common love for a particular sport. However, the competitive side of sport is not just on the field of play. A great many of these enthusiasts also practice sports handicapping as a way to attempt to predict sports results.

Many believe it is based purely on luck and favoritism, this is not true. A great deal of information is collated in an effort to predict the outcome of certain events. It is a combination of statistics and sporting knowledge, and can provide some interesting results.

Sport plays a big part in every nation's culture, and some competitions seem to have been about for ever. This also goes for betting on these events. This was the forerunner to the introduction of handicapping.

Betting is most commonly associated with horse racing, where punters are known to place huge sums of money on certain horses and their riders. These days nearly every type of sport, where there is an element of competition, attracts some form of gambling. International and prestigious events attract the most interest, with people from all over the world taking part.

When calculating a handicap, three basic elements are considered. These are technical, situational, and fundamental. The technical aspect takes into account the location of the event, and the competing teams previous results there. The relative current forms of the competing teams is known as the situational element. Statistics come into the equation as the fundamental element.

Most sporting events seem to attract sports handicapping of some kind. Some people are able to make a comfortable living from it and take it very seriously. However, a lot of people do it purely for enjoyment, to either compete with their friends, or to make an event more interesting to watch.
