For Great Advice On Knowing The Right Soil, Try These Great Tips!

By Sheryl E. Bennett

Does your neighbor's garden put yours to shame? You may suspect that your neighbor is employing some trick you do not know in their garden. The truth is that there is no gardening "secret". All it takes is knowledge on how to take care of your plants properly. You can begin your quest for knowledge by reading this article for some gardening advice.

In order for plants to grow, they must have enough CO2. Often, plants achieve better growth when they are surrounded by high levels of CO2. The best way to obtain a saturated level of carbon dioxide (CO2) is to use a greenhouse. CO2 levels are usually kept high to get the best growing situation for your plants.

Separate irises. You can create additional irises by splitting up irises that are growing into each other's space. Pick up bulbous irises after the foliage dies. The bulbs will then split naturally in the palm of your hand and if they're re-planted, they can flower next year. You should divide rhizomes using a knife. Cut the new pieces from its outside and dispose of the older center. A strong offshoot is needed on every piece that you decide to plant. Replant right away.

Split up your irises. You can increase the number of irises you have by splitting clumps that are overgrown. Lift bulbous irises when the foliage is dead. As soon as you pick up the bulb, it'll split into pieces. That's okay - in fact, it's desirable. You can replant the bulb pieces and next year you'll have a healthy bed of new irises. You can divide rhizomes with a knife. From the outside cut the new pieces and then get rid of the old center. There needs to be a minimum of one healthy offshoot on each of the new sprout sections. Replant your new rhizome pieces as soon as you have finished the cuttings.

Place organic mulch close to your vegetables. The mulch will add beneficial moisture to your soil. It will also prevent the growth of weeds. Every gardener can appreciate pulling fewer weeds.

Consider planting trees that produce decorative fall fruit. September to November is usually thought of as the season of orange leaves, but some trees produce fruit that really go well with the fall color scheme. The berries range in shade from yellow to deep red, and can last well into the winter, providing a little color in the garden and food for the birds. Good varieties include holly, crabapple, hawthorn and chokeberry.

You can use boiling water to get rid of weeds naturally. A pot full of boiling water is an effective herbicide, yet it is, chemically speaking, completely harmless. Soak weeds with freshly boiled water, just being mindful to not afflict damage on plants you want to keep. The weeds' roots will be damaged by the boiling water; normally, this prevents them from continuing to grow.

Use climbers to cover walls and fences. Known commonly as climbers, these plants are very versatile, easy to grow, and they will quickly spread out to cover up walls and fences within a single season. You can also use them in your landscape to cover an existing arbor, or allow them to climb up trees, or through shrubs. A number of climbers need to be attached to a support, but others just take care of their own attachments via tendrils and stems that twine. Reliable varieties include wisteria, honeysuckle, climbing roses, clematis, and jasmine.

You should always have a planting calendar when planning your garden. A planting calendar tells you which varieties you will plant in each season. You will also be able to prepare yourself ahead of time by buying the right seeds. Create a calendar on paper, or download one from the internet.

Are fresh mint leaves something you love but cannot stand how quickly they grow all over your garden? Contain their growth with a garden container or large pot instead. By using a separate containment unit, you are limiting the plant's ability to spread its roots and subsequently grow like wildfire. You can even plant the entire pot so that it still looks just like another plant in your garden.

To keep pests away, you can use plants in the garden or other natural materials. For example, slugs can be deterred by the presence of marigolds or onions. Another way to get rid of pests is to spread wood ash at ground level around shrubs and tree plantings. These are proven methods without having to use harsh chemical pesticides.

Bees assist with the pollination process, so they are clearly beneficial for your garden. There are a few out there that can do more harm than good. Carpenter bees are one such exception because they can damage wood as they make their nests. Overall, bees are beneficial to your garden, and should be left to go about their merry way helping your garden grow.

Coffee grounds can be used to amend soils that are high in alkaline. Basically, the grounds resupply the soil with acid. This is one of the most inexpensive ways to achieve this result. By amending your soils, you will help your plants grow and flourish.

If you live near an area where there is a lot of traffic, store your tools safely after use. Don't leave anything valuable out in plain sight, as you don't know who may want it or take it just for kicks.

Digging in clay soil with a shovel can be very difficult. The clay isn't easy to work with and will adhere to the shovel, which only makes the problem worse. Take the hard work out of using a shovel in clay soil by rubbing a light coat of car or floor wax over the surface with a clean cloth and buff the surface. Not only will the clay slide off the surface, but it will keep the end from rusting.

Know the perfect time to harvest the vegetables in your garden. Each variety needs a slightly different amount of growing time to produce the most flavorful vegetable. For example, baby peas and zucchini taste best when they are picked young. On the other hand, tomatoes taste best when they are as ripe as possible from the vine. It's best to learn when the harvest time is for your vegetables.

Plant annuals and biennials to make your flower beds brighter. Using a variety of flowers allows your flower garden to have a different look each season. They can make a handy, gap-filler between shrubs and perennials located in sunny areas. You should get varieties such as cosmos, petunia, rudbeckia, hollyhock, sunflowers or marigold.

When you boil vegetables, use the leftover water on your potted plants. You should also try using a bit of coffee grounds or tea to increase the acidity of the soil for your gardenias or your rhododendrons. Chamomile tea applied to plants can be an effective remedy for fungus problems.

You should plant larger plants in the fall. This will allow strong root development. Planting larger plants during the fall gives them the foundation they need for proper growth. Although it's starting to get cold outside, the ground is warm; in addition, newly planted trees and shrubs don't have leaves yet. These factors present an ideal opportunity for the plant's root system to develop.

Do you now see how gardening can be easier and even fun? As any other skill, there is a great deal of information available to teach you about the subject of gardening. Sometimes you need a clue, so you can begin and jump right in. With luck, you got such a spark from something in this article.
