How To Take Care Of Teak Patio Furniture

By Jordan Matthews

Outdoor teak furniture is the best quality patio furniture imaginable. Teak outdoor furniture is also quite easy to maintain. Teak wood has unique qualities that make teak furniture unmatched for using outside. Teak furniture requires just a little care to have a long lifespan.

Teak wood is one of the most expensive woods. However, you should consider that teak patio furniture is a good investment based on its durability.

It is good to clean up your teak occasionally to remove any dust. Easiest way is to employ a hose on a low pressure setting to rinse the dirt and dust away. Then, with a soft brush, rub the teak wood gently with a mix of warm water, dishwashing liquid, and a few tablespoons of bleach. If you use bleach too often is going to lighten the wood so bleach is not necessary. Once done, rinse once more with pure water. Dry the furniture using a towel or large rag to finish.

Teak furniture that is left outside will by nature start to slowly fade color from the honey tone of new wood to be a silver color. The process of teak turning gray is normal and only cosmetic. It does not do anything to the longevity of your patio furniture.

Some people like the golden honey tone of new teak wood and use teak oil in an attempt to keep the gold color. However, teak oil is not recommended because it must be used every three or four once you start applying it. Oil can also improve the likelihood for mildew and black spots to appear. A better idea is to apply teak sealer yearly after a good cleaning of your outdoor teak furniture in order to try to preserve the honey shade.

You may choose to buy a furniture cover to protect your outdoor teak furniture, especially for the winter months or if you live in a place that gets a lot of dust. If you select to use covers, be certain to get a furniture cover made from a breathable material. Do not buy a cover made from plastic which will trap moisture. It would raise the possibility of mold and mildew growing on your furniture.

Difficult stains including red wine can be removed with using sandpaper on the outer layer of the teak garden furniture. Begin by using a medium sandpaper and after that complete the job with a fine grade sandpaper to make the surface of the teak smooth. Sanding like this is also a way to bring out the golden honey coloring of teak furniture as you expose a new layer of teak wood which is still full of the oil of the wood.

It doesn't matter if your furniture is a teak rocker or a teak shower mat, a bit of maintenance will go far.

So you can see, your teak patio furniture is going to last for many years with little care from you. As it will last such a long time, teak wood is preferred over other kinds of hardwood. You will rest in knowing that the teak outdoor set you buy in the present can be handed down to your family in future generations.
