How To Take Care Of Teak Furniture

By Dustin Rockelman

Outdoor teak furniture is the top quality backyard furniture possible. Teak outdoor furniture is also extremely simply to look after. Teak has unique properties that make furniture made from teak perfect for outdoor use. Teak garden furniture takes only a little maintenance to last decades.

Teak wood is a precious wood. Regardless, you should consider that outdoor teak furniture is a worthy investment because of its natural strengths.

You should clean your outdoor teak furniture at least once a year in order to undo any dirt. You can employ a garden hose under low pressure to rinse the dirt away. Then, with a soft-bristled brush, scrub the wood gently with a mix of warm water, mild detergent, and a couple tablespoons of bleach. If you use bleach too often will cause a pale color so using bleach is up to you. Once done, rinse once more using pure water. Pat the surface dry using a towel or large rag finally.

Teak patio furniture that is left outdoors will by nature start to eventually shift color from the golden shade of new wood to become a silver-gray color. The process of teak becoming silver-gray is harmless and merely cosmetic. It does not do anything to the strength of your teak patio furniture.

Some really like the honey coloring of brand new teak outdoor furniture and apply teak oil to try to maintain it. However, teak oil is not worth it because it has to be reapplied every three or four from the time you begin using it. Oil will also increase the likelihood for mildew to grow. A better idea is to use teak sealer once a year after a good cleaning of your outdoor teak furniture to try to restore the golden honey shade.

You may opt to use a furniture cover for your teak furniture, in particular for the winter months or if you live in a place that has a lot of dust. If you choose to do so, make sure to purchase a furniture cover made with a breathable fabric. Do not choose a plastic cover which is bound to collect moisture. It would increase the likelihood of mold and mildew forming on your furniture.

Difficult stains including wine or coffee can get taken care of with a light sanding of the outer layer of the teak outdoor furniture. Start by using a medium sandpaper and after that finish with a fine grade paper to make a smooth outer finish. Sanding like this is another way to bring out the golden coloring of teakwood since you are exposing a new layer of teak wood that is still full of oil from the wood.

No matter if your furniture is a teak shower stool or a teak dining table, a bit of cleaning will go a long way.

So you can see, your teak outdoor furniture is going to last a lifetime with very little care on your part. As it lasts for so long, teakwood is better than other types of wood. You will enjoy knowing that any teak patio set you get now should be handed down to your children and grandchildren.
