Participating In The Container Gardening Portland OR Residents Appreciate

By Daphne Bowen

Portland OR has been known as a green city for many years. It has the largest percentage of green spaces, or parks, based on population of just about any city in the country. The amount of recycling that goes on, in The Rose City, is legendary. This recycling has replaced, to a large degree, garbage pickup as, in most areas of the city, garbage is only picked up twice a month, instead of once a week, like the recycling. The container gardening Portland OR residents use fits right in.

Using a container to plant things in becomes necessary when you do not have the room for a more conventional garden. That was why it began many years ago and it is still used for this reason. One of the other great reasons is because of the space that is not available in most apartment buildings or complexes. Portland has quite a few of these communities.

Getting the best garden going, in Portland OR, takes a trip to a home improvement store. In order to plant something into something, you must have the containers to do it. This is accomplished by rounding up everything that can hold the dirt and potting soil necessary to provide the moisture and nutrients to the plants. Acquiring a few old wine barrels can make this possible.

Wine barrels can be obtained from some of the wineries in town. These are located in the close in Northeast section of town. They can also be purchased from the home improvement stores as they are quite popular. These can be cut in half with a good circular saw and placed in an area that can support their weight when the soil is put into them.

Some of the smaller herbs and spices can be grown in large plastic buckets, such as can be had from a paint store. This will cut down on the costs of growing your own ingredients. The commercially available terracotta and ceramic pots, often used for decorative purposes, can be used in a more satisfying way. This is a way to spruce up the looks of a patio with a wind barrel half, surrounded by nice pots, all with colorful things that actually smell good too.

Growing things this way opens a lot of options. These options involve not only the various ingredients for great food, but also great conversation starters. Pots and barrels on a porch, balcony or patio are a few of them, as well and a window box is another one. You would be surprised at what you can plant that can grow right outside of the window in the kitchen, ready for you to reach out and grab a handful.

Green living and green eating, in Portland OR, means doing things differently. Taking care of the environment, reducing the carbon footprint you project and having what you need right outside is how Portlanders make it all work. Not having a big yard or all of the equipment to turn the soil does not mean you should eliminate natural things from your diet.

By helping the environment, all Portlanders share the responsibility they all believe in. It does not matter whether they are renters or owners of homes or apartments, the earth is waiting for their decision to help. When you can give back and have fun while getting something great to add to sauces and salads, that is great.
