Be A King, Play Kings Cup

By Jules Hummer

If you've ever been to a party, then you've probably played the Kings Cup drinking game. Otherwise, you may have played Circle of Death, which is the same game. Rules for this game vary from group to group, and hundreds of variations are available. Players will notice that the core principles remain the same, though. In each variation, you can't lay without an empty cup, beer, playing cards face-down around the cup, and some friends. The game tends to run clockwise as each player draws a card. Drinking rules are associated with each card based upon number or face. When a given card is drawn, players have to follow the Kings drinking game rules. Here's a guide to what each card means in basic Kings rules drinking games:

Each card has its own unique rule. When drawn, the player or entire group could be at risk.

Three: You take the spotlight with this card and take three drinks.

Three "Three Means Me" If a player pulls this card, then they must drink the equivalent of three drinks.

Five: The men go bottoms up with their beers.

Four: Four drinks are to be consumed, two by the drawing player and two to be given out.

Seven: Throw your hands up and make sure everyone else does, too. The last person to follow through must drink.

Six: All the women must drink as "six means chicks."

Nine: Pick a random word and look to the person on your left. From there, they must choose a rhyming word as fast as possible. Everyone follows suit until someone can't figure out a rhyme. That person must drink.

Nine "Nine Means Rhyme" On their turn, a player draws this card and chooses a word. The player to their left needs to pick a word that rhymes with that one. Everyone continues this pattern until a player can't think of anything. At that point, they're forced to drink.

Jack: Play a game of "Never Have I Ever" with three or five fingers. At some point, a person is going to run out of fingers, and they'll have to take a drink.

Ten: The "New Rule" card. The drawing player quickly thinks of a new rule for the game, such as, "if someone says 'drunk', they have to drink." Some Kings rules drinking games stack these new rules on top of each other whiles others say the old rules cancel out when a new rule is put into play.

King: Pull one of the first three Kings, and you'll add some beer into the King's Cup. However, drawing the final King results in that player drinking their entire beer and everything in the King's Cup.

Queen: The first player to draw a Queen is named the "Question Master". During the Kings cup drinking game, the Question Master will ask other players questions. The answerer must answer in the form of a question of they have to take a drink. A new Question Master is named when another Queen is drawn.

Another popular variant of the Kings drinking game involves an unopened beer. After cards are drawn, the cards are placed under the beer can's tab. The player that pops the tab with their card must drink the beer. The rules are slightly different here to accommodate the unopened beer. Kings drinking rules change with each party, but the Kings Cup drinking game is incredibly popular. Based upon the rules chosen, the game can play out in countless ways. For each variation, players are guaranteed to drink a lot of beer. The game doesn't stop until the alcohol is gone, so get started with the best drinking game ever created!
