The Best General Travel Advice

By Jason K Maison

Few things are as stressful as traveling. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, the idea of packing everything you need into a small suitcase and leaving home for an extended amount of time can be overwhelming. Follow the advice in this article to help you turn your travels into an enjoyable experience.

You will want to buy souvenirs. Be aware that many items pose as souvenirs, meaning they are not that unique and made in other countries. You could probably find the same stuff back home. In other words, be on the lookout for the truly unique souvenirs that you would like to take home with you.

When traveling by bus, make sure to check the bus company's luggage policy. Many companies have a limit on how many bags you can bring with you, and how much these bags weigh. By finding out how much you can bring with you, you can avoid unnecessary delays at the bus station.

You can travel internationally and save money. Travel to destinations where the U.S. dollar is the closest to the local currency in value. All inclusive packages are also a great way to save money when traveling. Last, talk to your travel agent and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Never keep all your spending methods (cash, credit cards, checks, etc) in one place. If that item is lost or stolen, you will still need access to money. Keep the items you'll need for the day in a wallet or purse and store the rest in a secure place, like a piece of luggage with a lock or a false bottom.

When traveling to interesting new destinations, consider shipping new purchases back to your home, rather than burdening your return journey with excess baggage. It is normal that you will want to bring some of that unique culture home with you, so don't limit yourself to only small items that can be easily packed. Stores will often offer to ship items for you if requested, just be sure to shop at reputable establishments and get receipts that clearly state shipping charges.

Plan clothing for your trip so that everything can be worn together. This reduces the need to pack individual "outfits" and allows you to plan for the number of days you'll be traveling. If all of your clothes match, you don't have to worry about which are clean when you're doing laundry.

When checking into a hotel, always ask if they have a mini refrigerator that can be brought to your room. Though not always advertised, many hotels actually do have this service available. Even if it costs a small fee per day, the benefits of having access to your own healthier snacks and drinks will not only contribute to a more enjoyable trip, but will also save you a lot of money.

If you are traveling in a car, take a bike with you. A bike will help you get exercise after a long day in the car, and it can also help you learn a little about the place that you are in. You will also be able to see more local landmarks than you would have in the car. Try to fit the bike in your trunk if possible.
