Sims 3 Wii

By Charles Kunovich

At last! We finally have the Sims on the Wii with the new Wii Sims 3 Console. I'm not sure why it has taken EA so long, but thank you EA anyway! And I honestly think this takes Sims to a new level, especially with the new multi-player option. As with all Sims games you are in control of character creation where you can pick and choose characteristics and looks. But I really do think Sims 3 on Wii is a little bit different, especially if you're used to playing on the PC.

I know some of the reviews and forums have not been too kind to Sims on Wii. However, in reading those reviews I noticed something in common. It was clear from what was being said that none of the reviewers had stuck at this new version of the game and really got into the "guts" of the game. Like most good things in life, you have to work at Wii Sims 3, and I think existing fans expected everything to be the same, it's not! You have to really dig into the multi-layers and understand the new techniques and functionality, it's more subtle as well in my opinion.

As with all previous versions of the Sims you can make what you want of your Sims! Evil, paranoid, romantic, or whatever! You're the one in control of your Sims' destiny, and it's up to you whether those inner most dreams come true or they vanish in a puff of despair. Make your Sims global rock stars, world leaders, or expert thieves? This is the traditional fun that millions of Sims fans have come to know and love.

"All-new" "Karma Power" is one of the new features in this version of Sims 3. It's an all or nothing power! You can give your Sim her heart's desire or leave him destitute! It's very powerful and can bring true love, God like beauty, riches and ultimate power...or it can strip you of everything. Once you get adept in its use you can even control the weather (oh, I wish). Be careful though, get it wrong and the Grim Reaper could well pay you an unexpected visit!

I really like that this version allows multi-player mode. So you can play with friends in the new co-op mode. But again you have to exercise caution. Like in most multi-player games friends can help or hinder. You can have up to four players in the "Life Moments Game" and you win by scoring reward points.

Beach Town is new in Wii Sims 3 and is a real innovation. This is really good fun as you can create your own Soap Opera. I really don't know how some of those reviewers didn't think this was just amazing fun! With loads of new features such as new careers, residents, traits and life wishes you can create your own Beach community where you are the soap star. How do you treat the other residents and what dramas do you cause? Your choice...just brilliant.

As usual in this version of Sims you fully control your Sim in terms of personality, character and looks as well as traits. However one new angle on this is "mini-challenges". These are great fun as you try to find your life best friend or get that all important first kiss!

Going onto the Wii platform has opened up a whole host of powerful new Sim customization tools. There is a new "pre-fab quick build" tool so you can build homes in double quick time. You can the fill your Sim City with your own creations. There is even an online library that you can download an amazing array of objects, designs and characters from other players. You can also share your own Sim creations through this method.

One of the really fun facets of Sims in the past has been adventure quests. There are many more and new quests as guide your Sim through your City. Look for new landmarks and buildings as well as search for hidden secrets.

The Wii version has everything from the PC Simsville plus so much more. Add to this the amazing online communities and better graphics and this game is a real winner.

Create-a-Sim is the feature where you create and mould your own Sims exactly as you want, even down to facial features and clothing preferences to personality types and setting life goals.

One of the new powers I thought was great fun is "Karma Chameleon". This is very powerful, but as we've seen in a lot of games in the last year, such power can come at a price. "Karma Chameleon" can bring you instant beauty, youth and love...but it has a dark side. You can, if you're not careful end up in an epic fall or being abducted by aliens. Abuse the power totally and watch out for that Grim Reaper or other unexpected outcomes!

You have been warned!

Build and Share is another great new feature. You have to join the online community to participate, but it's worth doing. Once in you have access to anything else anyone has shared in the community. You can use other people's creations and share your own. You can share with people all over the world and is a great addition that massively increases the scope of the game. I guess this is what I was talking about in terms of new dimensions and why I think some people were too quick to criticise before exploring the game properly.

There's one other new feature that I really enjoyed and that's "Format Specific". Only available on Wii, you can use the direction control method to let your friend know what you're doing...on Facebook. How cool is that?

To conclude, I think experienced Sims players felt they should just be able to pick up Wii Sims 3 and play at the same level they have been used to, but Wii Sims 3 does need a bit of exploration even for experienced Sims players.

So my advice is don't be put off by the odd bad review. That little bit of effort and learning will reward you amply. Yes, it took me a bit of time, but it was so worth it. Once I'd got in and understood the new layers and dimensions and it all fell into place, I just loved this new "take" on Sims...and I'm sure you will too - enjoy!
