Last night I was flicking with some disinterest through the catalogue proffered by a well known chain shop and I stumbled across the pages offering fishing tackle. I was really completely impressed by a number of the deals detailed on kits of tackle, mostly targeted at those interested in beginning angling.
It was somewhat different to what was offered when I was a lad. Then, the main place to visit was Woolworths, to choose from the Winfield label which was, frankly, rubbish. They used to come apart rather fast but the good thing was that by the time they did, one was primed to get proper fishing tackle anyway, or you had decided to give up angling anyway.
I have zero doubt that the bait and tackle sets that the catalogue store sell are of rather unexceptional quality, which is of course ideal for the beginner. Things like float sets will probably last for a very long time and be ideal for any fisherman needing to restock misplaced bait and tackle, but for fathers or grandfathers aiming to introduce younger family members to the enjoyment of fishing, these sets are perfect.
There is as well a psychological plus to be had in keeping the keenness of the recently inspired tackle dangler, which is that, once they opt to have a crack and find friends who are similarly interested, to head off for the lakeside with a complete set of bait and tackle will gather approving looks all round and instill a feeling of wellbeing which will be forever associated with fishing.
Naturally there will need to be lots of paternal teaching first in order to ensure that he or she knows how to set up the fishing tackle with some ability before letting them to set out on their own adventures. I well remember my first trip out, which was an inter-troop fishing match with the scouts. I had only been out a number of times with my uncle and ended up getting into the most awful muddles and sacrificing most of my fishing line as a result. It was most shaming as I spent almost the total afternoon trying to unravel a variety of cats' cradles, then getting frustrated and cutting the line and beginning again.
This is not the way to hearten unsullied blood into the hobby. angling can be a complex process, and for beginner wants to be trained how to correctly setup the fishing tackle before setting out on their own.
And for this purpose, the sort of bait and tackle kits are excellent to promote the desire to learn the finer skills.
