How To Effectively Grow Ginger Rhizomes

Most crops will have a similar way of growing, but they vary a little bit. Ginger Rhizomes will have their way of growing them due to their unique characteristics. They will only have a similar growing method with other crops in the same classification. This is a plant known to produce large attractive leaves throughout summer period and aromatic edible roots which are harvested when ready. The following is the process required when growing the crop.

First, one is supposed to prepare the ground for planting. This will include identifying a good place which is well drained and with rich soil. Cover that section of your garden with two-inch layer organic manure and mix it with soil. The mixing activity can be handled by use of a spade which will enhance an effective mixing process. Also, you should ensure that the selected section is on partially shaded.

Secondly, you need to cut fresh ginger root. It must be almost a two-inch section which you will be required to plant. Make sure you have cut a section containing a bud and one which resembles a small bump. Then, lay the roots in open ground but dry for some days. The preferable period needs to be one to two days to give the cuts some adequate time to cure and scab over.

After they are ready, pick them and dig some holes measuring almost half an inch. Place the ginger in the holes and ensuring that all buds face upwards. This will enhance their easy growth. Also, you have to make sure all holes are two to three inches away from each other in all directions. This is important through giving the roots an adequate space for their growth.

There will be a need for one to consider watering the roots daily. The soil should not be left to dry since it can terminate their growth. Therefore, you should water the bed to enhance a fast growth. With time, you will realize that leaves will sprout. This will mean that you must increase the amount of water. The increment need follow a certain sequence every week.

As they grow, ensure you apply a balanced ratio of water-soluble fertilizer. This ought to be done once monthly. The application of fertilizer should be by the recommendation indicated on the package. So, you will be expected to read the instructions carefully before applying it to avoid making any mistake which may damage your crops.

Moreover, you will be needed to cut back the foliage. This is when they are ready for harvest. In this case, one needs to cut them to within a height of two inches after which the leaves will die. Then, dig up the roots and cut off the sections of rhizome perimeter to be used for the kitchen. You may replant the main root mass later on.

In conclusion, you need not forget that next summer season will be another growing season. The cut main root mass will be required to be replanted. Make sure you have spread the garden with two to four inches of mulch. The mulching is important in protecting the soil and rhizomes from getting into contact with the cold and freezing season till the next summer period.
