Conveniently Beautiful Tropical Moth Orchids

By Sharon Roberts

Flowers are nature's decorative gifts and over the years people have found many creative ways to cultivate and use these gifts. Sometimes though, taking care of them can become tedious and time consuming. Moth Orchids have a special place in the hearts of many professional and novice horticulturalists. This is because they are breathtakingly beautiful and require minimal maintenance efforts.

The moth-like appearance of the petals accounts for the name of the flower. In fact, the name, in part, originates from the Greek Phalluna which means moth. The delicate petals have a soft and velvety texture making the flower seem even more moth like. A breed consisting of approximately sixty species, this flower has wowed its way into the hearts of many around the world.

There is a wide array of color options with this flower whose scientific name is Phalaenopsis. Colors such as yellow, green, orange, red purple and white are available. A speckled variety is also available. This means that almost any color preference can be met with this plant. The variety available is ideal for decorators because multiple colors can be combined to create the design effect desired.

With the myriad of colors and patterns available, it is not hard to see how the flowers can be a dream come true for novice and expert decorators. Homes and office environments are made more appealing and comfortable by their presence. Additionally, they bring an atmosphere of elegance to formal events such as wedding receptions.

Modern day flowers enthusiast find them particularly appealing because they are exotic in appearance but require very little maintenance. This makes it easy for horticulturalists to reproduce them and make them available to personal and commercial use. Home owners who choose to sue them to enhance the decoraion of the living environment appreciate the fact that in this fast paced environment, the flowers can survive without constant support.

The ideal environment for a Moth Orchid is a tropical one. The plant also prefers limited light setting, another feature that makes it ideal for household use. The ideal indoor location would therefore be a spot that admits a low amount of light. The low demand for light makes the plant very convenient for home owners who crave the tropical aura they provide but live in non tropical climates. UV lighting can be used to substitute for sunlight in sun deprived settings.

The plant's single stem structure restricts its ability to retain water. This makes frequent watering a necessity. Frequent watering can be facilitated by a drip system. This drip system does not need t be complicated. Often a simple bottle or container with a small hole to allow for dripping is perfect for supplying a steady flow of water. This is perfect for the house or office. Larger scale horticulture requires more complex drip irrigation systems.

The world of beauty that these flowers reveals to mankind is both astonishing and useful. The fact that they are easy to cultivate make them the ideal flower of the twenty fist century. It is no wonder modern science has already found a way to engineer additional versions through hybrid technology..
