The path to becoming a pro in photography does not have any specific path, just like in any artistic job. One can follow any way they find suitable for themselves to achieve the same results. However, knowing the kind of photographer one wishes to become is the first step. Photographers are of several different types. Major ones are portrait photographers, photojournalists, industrial photographers, fine arts photographers, commercial photographers, and scientific photographers.

In most cases, portrait photographers work in studios. Clients visiting the studios can have their image taken on various backgrounds. Where necessary, pictures can be printed and placed in frames according to the preferences of the client. Portrait photographers also leave their studios to meet with clients in schools, offices, homes, and parks among other places. They sometimes have to take photos while on such meetings.

Various responsibilities are entailed in photography. When one is self-employed, they will need to take clients from the public. Being useful to a client will require understanding their exact needs. One will need to discuss about the type of images needed and their purposes. One can then base on that information to offer advice. Before photo shoot, one will have to arrange backgrounds, props, still life objects, scenes, and products.

The work of photography involves liaising with professionals in other fields. Some of the professionals one may need to liaise with are commissioning editors, art directors, graphic designers, writers, gallery managers, and picture researchers. Photographers usually communicate with photographic subjects during photo shoot sessions. They communicate to direct, encourage, and ease tension in the subjects.

Entering this field does not necessarily require one to be holder of a degree. However, to gain more clients and to build a reputation, having a degree would be better. Degree options available to people are many and diverse. They include graphics, photography, fine art, media studies, digital imaging, and art and design.
