Composition. There are several things that could make up a good composition. But in simpler terms, this could mean how the overall photo appears. The element of balance is the easiest thing to notice. It has to be present in the photo so that nothing on it looks out of place.

Focus. You should be able to see a clear focus on the photo. Regardless of how small the chosen subject, as typical of insects, you should be able to see the clarity of the detail placed on it. A good focus would allow the viewer to see which among the elements present in the area should be given more attention. It also gives you an idea what the image is all about.

Story. Some say that stories are only good if humans are involved. Unless there is human participation, the photo need not to convey any story. Wrong. Even abstract paintings bring out certain emotions to its audience. Same thing applies to photographs. Insects are also living creatures. They hunt for food and run away from predators. Capturing these activities in a picture already has a story in it.

Contrast. There are times when it is easier to see something when its opposite is visible. For instance, it is easier to see a single black dot if it is against a white background. If you are taking a photo of a lady bug with a black and red color, you can contrast it with the green background of the forest. Contrast can come in many form. It could be the size, shape and color of your subjects.

Fifth is the quality of the photo in general. This refers to how clear the photo is. The message of a photograph is only as clear as how it is taken. If the quality is blurry, small but important details may not be highlighted.

Get the best quality photo by knowing some of the qualities that makes a good one. If you are planning to buy one for display or collection, be sure to consider the things mentioned on this list as part of your consideration for the selection.
