Growing And Caring For A Miniature Crape Myrtle

By Georgia Diaz

Growing a miniature crape myrtle in the backyard can be quite the hobby because these are one of the most beautiful dwarf trees that one can ever have. However, the catch here is that it is not simple to grow this small tree because it is actually quite demanding and may need some attention. So if one would want to grow one at his garden, then here are a few tips that may help.

The first step in growing one of these things would be to first find a good spot or location where it would be good for the tree to flourish. A good place would be in an area where the sunlight really shines and where the place has rather dry soil. The best times to start growing a myrtle tree would actually be in the summer or probably in the spring.

Once one has already found that type of spot in the backyard or garden, then the next step would be to dig a hole inside. When the hole is opened, then the next thing to do would be to attach the roots in the ground. From there, cover up the hole with soil and water the roots.

Once that is done, then the next thing to do would be to apply a little bit of compost on the base of the myrtle. Now the compost will be acting as the provider of nutrients to the tree or rather the fertilizer alternative. Circle the compost around the area and make sure that there is a substantial amount of it.

After putting the compost, the next thing to do would be to put some mulch on the same place the compost was placed. However, one should take note that the mulch has to be placed around two to three inches from the tree trunk. It should be slightly away from the compost that was placed a while ago.

Now when the tree is already set, then all one needs to do would be to maintain it so that it stays alive and grows to be strong. It usually needs to be watered quite a bit during the summer because of the heat. However, never put too much water because it likes soil that is dry.

When springtime comes, one should prune the tree regularly because there are some things that need to be cut. During the spring, there will be some extra branches that are weak and need pruning so that strong ones can grow out. Also, if there are some pieces of dead wood, they should also be taken out.

Now if one would want to have a miniature crape myrtle there at his backyard, take note of some of these things. Remember that this type of tree would need a bit of tender loving care in order to grow. However, once it has already grown strong, then one may sit back, admire it, and just maintain it so it does not die.
