How To Naturally Clean Old Metal Signs

By Ann Jordan

If you have old metal signs that are in need of a good cleaning, it is a good idea to clean them in the most natural way possible. Using techniques and products that are natural are less harsh on both you and your sign.

The first step is to fill a pale with water. The size of the pale depends on the size of the surface area to be cleaned. If you are simply dealing with small area to be treated than you can just use a small container or spray bottle. To the water, add some liquid dish soap. Liquid dish soap will allow you to clean any greasy surface with relative ease.

Get a good sturdy cloth to dip in the water, wringing out any access water and then simply wipe the sign off. Some people prefer to use a brush or sponge to clean the dirty surface. Do be extra cautious when choosing to use a brush though because they can sometimes cause scratching on sensitive surfaces such as metal, always use a brush that is very soft.

Once you are satisfied that the area is clean, then you need to dry the area with a clean cloth or towel. Do not be too concerned if the area has not been completely clean immediately, the action of drying the surface with the cloth or towel can help in removing any lingering dirty spots that may be seen.

Stubborn marks and dirt can also be approached with vinegar and water if you would like. When you add vinegar to your water, always add equal amounts of each to the pale or spray bottle. Once the vinegar mixture has been applied to the entire area to be cleaned, rinse the solution off and dry as needed.

If you feel that neither the liquid soap mixture or the vinegar mixture are giving you the results that you want than you might consider using a mixture of salt and lime juice, it too can help with the removal of dirt and grime. Simply wash the area with the mixture, rinse and dry it well.

Regardless of the mixture that you have chosen to use for cleaning or the size of the surface that is to be cleaned, always test a very small area of the surface before covering the entire surface with the cleaning solution to ensure that the solution is not too harsh for your particular surface. Cleaning a dirty surface gently and more frequently can help prolong the life of your products and make them easier to care for since more frequent cleaning would help prevent dirt buildup.

Safety should always be at the forefront of any activity. It is important if the old metal signs are up too high, you use extra caution while you are cleaning them. Having someone present while cleaning hard to reach areas is always a good idea to ensure help is readily available to you should you need any kind of assistance.
