Useful Information Regarding Mohair Merino Fiber

By Dorothy Davis

Mohair falls among the highest quality of natural fibers in the world today. This fiber is obtained from the Angora goat. This is a special kind of goat in many ways. One of the ways in which the angora goats is special is the fact that it body is covered in a single coat of hair. The fibers that come from the primary and secondary follicles of this goat do not have any significant difference from each other. Here are facts regarding Mohair merino fiber.

Most breeds of goats and sheep moult on an annual basis. However, that is not true for the angora goat because it retains its hair throughout the year. This usually makes it possible for the hair to be harvested two times in a year. After every six months, the hair is usually long enough to be harvested to be used to produce the refined form of mohair fiber.

The quality of hair which is harvested from the Angora goat is normally of high quality. For a very long duration of time it has been taken to be the best fiber quality which human beings have ever known. The hair is usually straight and long but it can be wavy and curvy sometimes. The individual strands normally do not intertwine to make them hard to separate. Instead, they remain as individuals.

The level of smoothness of the fiber is very high and it is naturally lustrous as well. In most cases, the fibre appears in white color, but it is also possible to find other colors such as gray and black. Other qualities that this material has that put it above other similar fibers include resistance, elasticity, durability, resilience, soil shedding, comfort, abrasion resistance, and moisture management among others.

Also of great importance is its very low flammability which is required in some applications. Products made from these hairs do not easily pile or felt. Despite being highly durable, this material is biodegradable meaning that it decomposes if buried in the soil. When fully decomposed it makes the soil quite fertile and suitable for growing plants.

Also, the insulation property of this material is high. Clothing which is made from this material is able to keep individuals very warm during the cold winter months. Most winter clothing is in fact made from this material. Fiber can also be used in making residential products like curtains, upholstery and carpets.

Presently, South Africa is the global leader in the production of mohair. South Africa accounts for more than half of global production of this material. It is also the home to the finest mohair fiber in the world according to research. The United States takes the second place in global production, with the state of Texas being the major producer in the whole country.

There are many other countries that are also joining suit in producing this product worldwide. These countries include New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Lesotho, Argentina, and Nigeria. South Africa has one of the most favorite climatic and geographical conditions that favor the existence of angora goats. That is part of the reason why South Africa is a global leader in production.
