Jump on the ground and dive for those loose balls. Don't be afraid to hit the ground hard and get a little hustle on. Not only will this help the team, but the coach will surely notice your improved effort. Team moral is always a good thing to keep in high numbers.

Don't play while injured or else your injury will worsen. Basketball is physically demanding, and it is easy to get hurt. Trying to play through the pain could just cause more damage. If you have a very serious injury, talk to a doctor.

Learn something about basketball every day. Even if it's the off-season and there's nowhere to play, you can still improve your game. To become a better dribbler, work on becoming more flexible. The looser and more flexible you are, the better you will be able to elude defenders. Stiffer players are easier to defend. The more flexible you are, the harder it is to defend you. So to improve your dribbling, you need to improve your flexibility.

Know your place on the team and play it. You may be better as a support player than as the one who can dunk the basketball. That doesn't mean you will never make a winning shot, it just means that you don't neglect other players or interfere with them in pursuit of scoring points.

Add stretching to your warm up, cool down, and work out routines. Stretching helps give you a wider range of motion with your arms and legs. That's critical to basketball. It'll allow you to do things with the basketball that others will find impossible, including between the leg dribbling and behind the back passing.

To maximize your layups, take off with the foot that opposes your shooting hand. That means, if you shoot right-handed, use your left foot for taking off. This balances your body when moving towards your basket. It keeps your body in between you and the defender.

A chest pass is one of the best ways to get the ball to your teammate. As long as no one from the other team is standing between you and your intended recipient, go for it. You can pass with a step for more power, or without a step to move the ball rapidly.

Hold the basketball during TV time at home. Any contact you have with the ball will only improve your skills. You are essentially teaching your hands how to work with the ball. How to hold it, move with it, and even toss it. The more time you get with the basketball, the more comfortable you will be.

Rebounding is one of the major keys to winning a game as any coach will tell you. Therefore, it's important to practice getting rebounds, and part of this practice should be spent blocking people out. As well, when you're by yourself, hop to it with that energy, and go get that rebound!
