What Makes The Best Mosquito Trap Effective

By Cathy Mercer

There are very few countries in the world where there are no mosquitoes. Almost anywhere that there is warm weather, water and humans will have a population of these blood sucking creatures. In the worst cases they carry malaria and many other diseases which can be deadly. This is why people search for the best mosquito trap to protect themselves and their families.

Mosquitoes seek out their prey by using sophisticated senses of sight and smell. Using this combination they can locate warm moving bodies who can provide the food they need. Once a target has been found they latch onto the skin and suck the blood from the veins near the surface.

Blood is needed to produce fertile eggs, it is for this reason that only the females bite. During the biting process they produce saliva which is injected into the wound to keep the flow of blood constant. This saliva causes the rash and irritating itch. Some people seem to get bitten a lot more than others and suffer more. This is because there are natural chemicals in sweat which can attract or repel the bugs. Lucky people have the repellent and rarely get pestered or bitten.

When seeking their prey, the females detect body heat and the carbon dioxide which we breathe out. Combined with the ability to sense movement, the female can home in on living beings which will provide a source of food. Many of the most effective traps available work by fooling the female into thinking they are tasty meal instead of the nearby humans.

There are simple devices that can be made at home to attract and catch mosquitoes. These normally involve a plastic bottle which contains a mix of ingredients which give off carbon dioxide when combined such as sugar and yeast. The bottle is then placed where the mosquitoes are most prevalent and they fly inside and drown; hopefully before reaching their human targets.

These home made traps are often effective for short periods of time but need to have the mixture inside regularly changed. The widely available electronic devices use the same bag of tricks to mimic humans and trick the insects to come towards them. They continue to provide protection for long periods of time and are normally more efficient than anything home made.

There are several companies which produce a range of contraptions to place in your home or garden to kill mosquitoes. These can easily be found on the internet, in hardware or large department stores. They vary widely in price depending on their level of sophistication and size. The performance of the trap often depends on its location as even the best models will not work effectively if they are not in the flight path of the bugs.

Prevention is often said to be better than cure and by removing standing water from your home you can reduce their breeding grounds and thus the numbers you have. Sprays, plug in repellents and topical skin repellents can also help keep mosquitoes at bay and provide protection from biting. Using a combination of these precautions and the best mosquito trap which is correctly placed will greatly reduce the chances of you or your family getting bitten by these potentially deadly and definitely annoying little creatures.
