The Films Which Best Showcase Vintage Bicycling

By Rob Sutter

With vintage bicycling climbing in terms of popularity, I believe that it is worth talking about it in many respects. It's clear that it has an audience because of how much it blends different styles. Yes, these looks are very much classic but when you add in the fact that conventional methods of control are put into place, I think that these are some of the best worth investing money into. Films have shown biking in a number of ways and talking about a few examples could prove interesting.

While the 80's was a decade that I was unfortunately unable to live within, I love the slew of films which was released during that time. One such film was "The Goonies" and I think that any child from that time could attest to just how influential it was. A group from the Goon Docks in Oregon has their sights set on buried treasure but they travel via one particular method. With two-wheeled rides being utilized, a sense of adventure follows which has captured many an imagination.

"Napoleon Dynamite" is a much different case, since I don't think people enjoyed it as universally as they did "The Goonies." While I personally enjoy the film for what it is - a comedy that isn't meant to be taken seriously - others simply could not get behind the type of humor presented. One such moment of the film involved Napoleon taking on a small jump thanks to the bike his friend let him use. After completely missing the jump in a moment of unexpected comedy, at least to me, a moment that still stands out was created.

"Pee-wee's Big Adventure" also stood out to me and I think part of it came about because of the uniqueness that this ride possesses. It was crafted just for that movie and it definitely goes to show in just how outrageous it looks compares to rides you might normally think of upon two wheels. Nonetheless, it is a visual marvel of sorts and it's one which has definitely earned its place in vintage bicycling. It was because of this film that I found myself interested in the authorities in the field like Linus Bike.

I know that I have left out a couple of other shining examples, though, "E.T." being just one of the major names. However, I wanted to give attention to those which haven't been as looked at as this one. There are a number of movies which have featured vintage bicycling, or even another type, in a great way. It goes to show just how tremendous this particular hobby is and how much of a role it can have on the big screen, many examples serving as proof of this.
