In my mind, obstacle event racing is one of the more exciting physical activities that you can be part of. Not only does the adrenaline kick in at a great level but the impact it can have on your body can prove to be a great one. Television once showed a number of programs which featured it and I thought that they were enjoyable, for the most part. Part of me wonders, though, if it could be aired again, though in a way that it is able to reach the mainstream.
I think one of the reasons that I liked watching these shows was because there were actions done that I wouldn't be able to go about on my own. Keep in mind that I enjoyed these shows especially during my youth when the contestants were many years older than I was. Nowadays, I feel like I could have held my own but the shows didn't last until that time, which is fortunate. It's sad to say because there were quite a few gems to talk about.
If you grew up during the 90's, you probably know a great deal about the shows featuring obstacle event racing, amongst them being on Nickelodeon. "Guts" is a great example, as is "Legends of the Hidden Temple." These are the ones I remember the most and I would like to think that they'd be the ones everyone else wanted the chance to compete in. Of course, not every one of these shows was tailored to kids. In fact, a select few were meant for an older group, as events like Spartan Race can tell you.
For those who tuned into Spike TV during 2003 and a few years after, maybe you were aware of "MXC," which was a great show in its own right. All of the footage imported from Japan, it was the kind of program that took the idea of "Guts" and added far more realism to it in terms of the hits taken. It seemed like the contestants were going through nearly impossible obstacles and oftentimes fell on their faces. Sometimes it made you laugh, other times it made you cringe.
All in all, obstacle event racing shows are some of my memories and I hate to see kids today not be exposed to them. The shows that I watched were some of the most enjoyable and I think part of that comes from how much the contestants pushed themselves. They wanted to be able to win and the training seemed to come together in order to bring the most fruitful of results. I would definitely be in favor of the decision of these kinds of shows reaching a mainstream TV audience again.
