How the ultimate watch was brought to life. The story of Kikuo Ibe and the G-Shock.
The G-Shock watch by Casio has become an iconic watch. It all started back in 1981 when Casio brought together a team headed by Kikuo Ibe. The project focused on the idea of developing the ultimate watch around the concept of the 'Triple 10'.
The idea behind the 'Triple 10' was to develop the ultimate watch. A watch that had a 10 year lifespan could survive a drop from 10m and was water resistant to 10 atmospheres.
That's just what they did and in 1983 the Casio G-Shock DW-5000C-1A was released. Around 30 different versions of the DW-5000 have been released DW-5000's that were highly mud and dirt resistant and models that included sensors for temperature and pressure.
Since then the G-Shock watch series has continued to evolve and grow with each new watch a boundary has been pushed further. Kikou Ibe said looking back at the development process that he thought "Watches are thin and fragile --- that was the common sense. I wanted to challenge it" and that's just what he did.
The G-Shock watch series has been developed with one goal in mind to be the ultimate watch. As a result of this G-Shocks are some of the toughest watches around. It's this combined with the continuous improvement made with each model released that makes the G-Shock brand what it is today.
This didn't happen overnight, in the 2 year period between identifying the 'Triple 10' concept and launching the first G-Shock, the DW-5000C-1A, Kikou Ibe and his team went through over 200 prototypes, but it was worth it.
The result of this is an iconic watch that is responsible for revolutionising the watch market and what watches could do. Watches nowadays can last lifetimes; will your G-Shock outlast you?
