Commuter Bikes: Should I Make the Move?

By Rob Sutter

A few years back, I had to go through my old bike being stolen right out from under my nose. To say it was a loss would be an understatement since bikes are pretty costly and I mostly used my own bike for exercise during the summer. I wanted to invest in a bike but it was difficult considering how saving money proved to be a challenge. I've read news stories about commuters and their commuter bikes, though, so maybe the time is right to get into renting one.

First of all, I have to note the feeling of brotherhood that comes from commuter bikes. For example, cities are highly condensed areas where cars and buses might not be the most ideal form of travel. Biking not only helps in this regard but it makes a certain area where people live gain that much greater a feeling of camaraderie, which is something that a company like Linus can support. A trend has the tendency to spread if a single person takes action, so a domino effect could come about as a result.

Commuter biking can also be positive when it comes to overall travel. Those who traverse amongst cities in which population is high yet condensed areas abound typically find it difficult to travel by way of car or bus. Cyclists typically don't have to worry about this since they have sidewalks and crosswalks which don't suffer from the same traffic issues. Because of all of this, arriving at ones destination occurs much quicker.

It seems as though commuter bikers are benefiting from superhighways made exclusively for them. In certain areas like Denmark, cycling is being encouraged more so because of the addition of these paths. The benefits derive not only from the physical benefits that biking has but uninterrupted intersections where traffic would normally occur as well. Throw in aesthetic and atmospheric additions such as fields and lakes and you have paths that more people may follow before long.

The litany of perks that commuter bikes are capable of producing seems to expand and cyclists should feel happy for being rewarded for something originally deemed a means of travel. Superhighways being brought to fruition will help those who are constantly hampered by the traffic issues normal roads have. However, biking shouldn't merely be considered a way of travel since it can be a hobby as well. People are passionate about exercise, biking included, so these benefits only help the deal become that much sweeter.
