Pool Covers

By Andy Randy

Among all the things you need for your swimming pool, having a cover is essential. Whether you have an in ground pool or an above ground pool, you need to have a cover. It may seem like a bit of a hassle, but it's necessary for many reasons.

One of the biggest energy wasters when it comes to pools, is on water evaporation. This happens due to a number of circumstances such as outdoor temperature, even indoor temperature, and general weather conditions. When you have a pool cover, you do reduce the amount of water that gets evaporated, which will save energy.

There is also the practical reason to have a cover being that if you have an outdoor pool, it will very likely collect various bits of debris from overhanging trees like leaves, sticks, and then just general dirt from being outside. Especially in the UK when we generally only use our pools when it's nice and warm outside, it leaves several weeks throughout the year where we won't be using our pool! So if we want to keep it filled, and ready to go at a moment's notice, it's best to protect it.

Really all you need to cover a pool is a piece of plastic. However plastic can tear, and just having a bit of plastic is not going to do the job very well over time. It is best to buy a pool cover made for the purposes you are needing one for. Pool covers tend to be made of strong plastic, and many of them are solar covers so they work especially well at keeping the heat in. However note that the opaque solar covers absorb less heat than the clear ones.

You can have a special roller installed that automatically takes the cover on and off, or you can do it manually, but if you are doing it manually, take care to have a place where you can fold the cover and store it while it's not in use.
